It was just like any other plane ride at first. There was nothing special about it at all. I was sitting next to Niall, who was out cold, as bored as I could possibly be. We had been stuck in the airport for like 12 hours and I was just over it all. I just wanted to be home with my family at that point. It had been a few months since I’d seen them, and I was starting to grow sort of anxious about the whole thing. I’d never been the kind who was good at staying away from my family for a long time, we were all too close.
I groaned slightly as Niall leaned his head on my shoulder, snoring loudly in my ear. I quickly shrugged him off and got up to use the restroom. I didn’t actually need to, but I needed to get out of that seat for a minute. It felt like all the walls of the plane had been growing closer and closer and I was starting to feel claustrophobic.
I was walking towards the bathroom when I saw her.
She was sitting on the aisle seat, her head buried in a book. I couldn’t read the title, but she seemed to be really into it. All I could see was her red hair, which was pulled into a tight bun on the top of her head, poking out from the top of the book. As I got closer I was desperate to get her attention for some reason. It wasn’t even like I could see her face, but she just intrigued me instantly.
My wish was granted when I ran straight into the flight attendant. A couple cans of soda fell to the ground with a clatter and I could instantly feel the heat rushing to my cheeks as I looked up to see that everyone was staring at us.
“Uh, I’m really sorry,” I said to the flight attendant. I bent down to pick up the soda cans that had landed right at my feet. “I’m such a clutz.”
“No, it’s fine,” she replied, instantly throwing on a flirty smile. I cringed slightly as I realized that she was just flirting because of who I was.
“Uh, right.” I said, looking past her towards the bathroom, in an attempt to get away from the awkward situation. As I looked, though, I could see the red haired girl looking straight at me. The heat that was already on my cheeks started to grow deeper under her gaze.
She was pretty, no doubt about that. She had a soft sort of face, with big green eyes that were hidden behind her oversized, black rimmed glasses. Her bright pink lips were turned upward into a slight smile as our gazes met. I couldn’t help but allow a similar one to fall upon my own face. I ignored the flirty stare from the flight attendant and walked straight over to the red haired girl, noticing that there was an empty seat right next to her.
“Hi, I’m Harry.” I said, sitting next to her as I extended a hand for her to shake. (I’m not exactly sure where the idea of shaking hands when you meet someone came from. In that moment, I couldn’t help but realize how strange of a habit that actually was.)
“I’m Callie.” She smiled, shaking my hand despite my doubts of its actual necessity.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Callie,” I smiled. She had long since closed her book in her lap. I noticed her grip on it and quickly asked, “what’cha reading?” I noticed a slight blush creep onto her pretty face.
“Uh, it’s The Fault in Our Stars,” she smiled sheepishly. “Have you ever read it?”
“I’ve heard of it, but haven’t had time to read it.” I answered back. She just nodded her head simply.
“Well, when you have time you should definitely read it,” I nodded in response. “It’s probably my favorite book ever.” I smiled again. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to this girl. “So, why are you going to England?” She asked when the conversation slowly dwindled into awkward “oh, yeahs,” and “uh huh’s.”
“To visit my family,” I smiled at the thought. “I haven’t seen them in a few months. I miss them a lot. Yourself?”
“Same.”

I was back in my seat an hour later, after I had gotten Callie’s phone number of course. Niall was finally starting to wake up, but I was starting to drift off at that point. None of us were really on the same schedules anymore. We would just sleep when we were tired, or when we had a chance. Plane rides were a good time for us to get some much needed rest, but sometimes it was hard for us to all sleep at the same time so that we could keep each other company. We were use to it by now.
The last thing I thought of before sleep consumed me was Callie. I don’t know how she had managed to consume my brain so quickly, but she had.
