Chapter 4

We had a fight that day.

Dad came home, the thing was looking at the house again, and he didn’t want to listen to me. Mom, she stayed out of that conversation and she seemed kind of distant. It was raining that evening, and there were lightings crossing the dark sky.

“Evelyn, how did that happen?” my dad shouted, trying to convince me other way, that mom couldn’t hurt herself on the freaking totem.

“I...I d-don’t know, Jon…it hurt me…” she weakly said, like she was about to cry.

“Baby, it couldn’t hurt you… you know that, right?” he asked, now really confused and worried. He was never superstitious, and he would always try to find a logical explanation to everything strange or unusual. It was almost his hobby. I was standing there and waiting for him to say something, but he didn’t say anything.

“How could mom scratch on it, when there are no sharp parts, even the fangs are carvings.” I said, but he seemed that he was still processing my mom’s answer.

” Look, there is something. At this point, I’d say that we both know it. You just have to accept it, and get rid of the fu**ing totem!” I said, and marched to my room. I slammed the doors behind me, but I couldn’t hear the slamming because of a lightning that stroke somewhere near in the town.

I decided to go to bed and try to forget all this mess, at least for a short while. I went to the bathroom, to take a quick shower and to brush my teeth. I afforded myself a hot massage in the shower, and the fresh smell of the shampoo took my thoughts away for a little while. I should do that more often. I was just about to exit the bathroom, when I heard sobbing from the kitchen. I slowly entered the hall that was leading to my bedroom, and that was going next to the kitchen. I stepped on the doorstep of the kitchen, and I could see my mom, in my dad’s hands, sobbing and crying quietly. I wanted to hug her, to comfort her, but my dad raised his hand to stop me. He formed “go” with his mouth, so I went. I entered my bedroom and sat on my bed.

“What’s this happening, Gigi?” I asked, and got a jump in the cage as an answer.

“I’ll take that as an I have no idea, but everything will turn out well huh?” I looked at my little birdie.

“Life is so easy for you, Gigi.” I sighed.

He started chattering, and looking at the window.

“You want some fresh air little one?” I said, and put his cage on the windowsill. The rain stopped, and it was nice and fresh out, but not cold. Almost perfect.

“Night, Gigi.” I said, and turned off the light. I covered myself with a thin blanket, and shut my eyes. I got Gigi, about five weeks ago. Mom brought him home a month after Jackie, my little Dalmatian disappeared. I was so sad about it, and I couldn’t help myself about it, so mom bought me a little Canary that couldn’t ran away that easy, to keep my thoughts away from Jackie.

Finally, I felt myself drowning in a dream, but then I heard some wiggling, and then a bang. Bird scream and slow silence, like an animal that’s dying slowly. I looked in the direction of the noise, that was coming from my window. The bird cage…

I felt chills running down my spine. The rain was starting again, and a lightning stroke. From that light, I could see an empty bird cage, with its small door, hanging on the side, almost destroyed.

I heard a squirming sound, coming from below my window. The totem…

My knees are shaking as I approach my window.

The lightning strikes again, and I can see three yellow feathers, peeking out of the monster’s teeth.

The eyes looking at me again, and its face giving  me one big, bloody smile.

So, yeah...
