She ran. She ran as fast as her little nine-year-old legs could carry her even with one hurt, but no matter how far she ran she couldn't get away from the scene that had plagued her mind for the past four days.
----------------
Her stepfather was leaning over her limp mother with a baseball bat, hitting her over and over. Her mother was covered in blood and bruises but the thing that drew the girl's attention was the eyes of her mother they were unfocused and glassy. The light that was in them had gone out but the man with the bat didn't seem to notice as he kept hitting the dead body of the girl's mother.

While the man was distracted the girl quietly stood up from her hiding place under the table in the kitchen of the apartment she and her mother had lived in and ran for the door.
-------------
That was four days ago. She had been running away from her apartment and living on the street for the past four days. Even though she lived in New York City all her life she saw things on the street that shouldn't have even existed.

She saw girls come out of trees when she slept in Central Park. There were cats with the faces of women in some alleyways. When she dug around for food she was usually scared off by other children with one eye in the middle of their forehead. She slept in a box near the door of a Chinese restaurant's kitchen to keep warm.
--------------
She was rummaging around in the restaurant's dumpster for leftovers when two police officers walked by. One was tall and skinny, the girl couldn't help but think he looked like a stick.  The other was short and fat, the girl thought that he looked like a blueberry.  While she was staring at the two officers she accidentally dropped a glass that she was moving to see if anything was underneath.

The short fat cop turned toward the noise and noticed her. "Jacobs, look at that kid. She looks homeless," the short one said to his partner.

The tall officer turned to look at the girl. The girl was frozen like she was caught with her hand in the cookie jar. Suddenly the girl bolted. "God damn it! Come on Elliot let's get her before she hurts herself," Jacobs said.

It didn't take long for the two police officers to catch the girl as she was extremely tired and was limping on her right leg.  Once the police officers had her in their grasp she went limp like she had no will to fight against them.  The officers were able to drive the girl to the emergency room at St. Victor's easily. Once they were in the emergency room they noticed that everyone was asleep, the doctors, the nurses, and the patients as well. The girl looked at the to officers escorting her to see that they were struggling to stay awake.  It wasn't long before they collapsed to the ground and started to snore.

Feeling that the officers weren't going going to be getting up anytime soon the girl walked off.  When she got outside she noticed that everyone was asleep.  There was a hot dog man that was asleep and was dangerously close to falling into the boiling water in his cart.   She quickly moved him away and grabbed a hot dog as payment for her trouble.

She walked for hours. Every person she looked at or walked past was asleep. The girl found this to be very strange. Finally she heard yelling coming from a block away, she ran towards the noise.  Once she turned a corner she saw forty teenagers in orange shirts and jeans, but that's not what stood out about them.  Every single one of them was wearing amour and had a weapon strapped on them. There were swords, knives, spears, and bow and arrows. Once she got close to them she exclaimed, "You're awake!"
