Chapter One

"That should do it!" I told myself, a smug grin appearing on my face. The man, who's name I didn't know, laid there unconscious at my feet. Blood spilling out of his head, limbs sprawled in every direction.

"Hazel Quinn, you have done it again. This should keep him away from Mom." I picked up my baseball bat and swung it over my shoulders, making my way back home.

I hope I did my mom justice, that guy had been following her all week, leaving notes about how 'He was back'. Whatever that means.

I climbed up the five flights of stairs leading up to our apartment, whistling along to a tune I made up.

I unlocked the door and called out, "MA I'M HOME!"

My yelling wasn't necessary, as Mom was sitting at the counter, looking over some paper work. Not surprising, she's always looking for a new job.

"Hey sweetheart! Sit down for a second, we gotta talk."

Since the fall of the crazy group my mom was in eight years ago, Mom had mellowed out a lot. She no longer had a squeaky, high voice, returning to her normal tone. She had gotten most of her sanity back, as she was no longer in their control. I was quite proud of her.

"So Hazel, I have been looking around for a new job, and I remembered that I'm still technically a doctor, and I went to see if the Gotham Asylum was hiring."

This sounds interesting.

"They have to make sure I'm still qualified, so I'll have to take a few tests, but if all goes well, I might get my job back!"

She seemed so excited, I couldn't help but smile at her.

"That's amazing Mom! I'm so proud of you!" I walked around the counter and gave her a hug.

Mom pulled away, keeping me in arms reached and asked, "Now, why are you covered in blood?"

I looked down and saw my clothes. My light blue jeans had stains all over them, and a few more rips then when I started. My white converse were no longer white and my yellow shirt was surprising pretty clean, save for the edges. My light brown hair was up in pigtails, and the purple tips on the end were now covered in blood.

"Oh, right. Well I got rid of that guy who had been following you all week, the one who was leaving the notes."

Mom seemed to get a little shaky when I mentioned the notes, as she pulled out of my grip and went back to working on her papers, I'm assuming was the tests she need to do for the Asylum.

"Right, him." She managed to say. "Well, if I start working at the Asylum, we can't do that anymore."

I blinked, trying to understand what she was saying. "What do you mean?"

"If I start working at the Asylum, you can't go around attacking everyone that does something to our family. We can't be so violent and crazy anymore."

"I don't understand, Mom this is all I know how to do! You taught me my ways. How can you just turn your back on everything you know?" I asked her. I was baffled, this was my mom's life, how could she give it all up?

"This isn't everything I know, I had a life before I went crazy and I can have a life after. I'm not giving it all up, I just don't want to see you in the Asylum."

She patted me on the check, and stood up from her chair. Making her way over to the stove, she looked over her shoulder and said, "Dinner's at 6:30, we'll be having spaghetti."

Dinner went by quickly, and Mom informed me a bit more about her potential job. After I cleaned our dishes and put them away, I went to my room and played random playlist on my IPod. The first song to play was 'Trees' by Twenty One Pilots, a favorite of mine.

I took a shower, cleaning the blood of my body, while singing along to the songs the playlist played.

After that, I put my pajamas on and started walking towards the living room, but I stopped when I heard my mom's hushed voice. Trying to stay hidden, I tiptoed against the wall, listening intently to her conversation.

"Ivy, I'm telling you, he's back. He's been sending people to follow me. I'm scared he's gonna go after Hazel."

She sounded stressed, concern lacing her voice as she spoke, just above a whisper.

"I'm working at the Asylum now, so if anything happens, I'll be able to keep an eye on him...No, Hazel's never met him, and I don't plan on her meeting him."

Meeting who? I never knew who was father was, but I knew he had a huge impact on my mom.

"Maybe she can stay with you for awhile? Just until I know that she's safe...oh really? Thank you Ivy! I'll have her over by tomorrow night. Yea, she might like to meet Sage, I think they'll get along quite well. Thanks Ivy, I'll talk to you tomorrow, bye."

She ended the call, then dropped her head into her hands. "Harley, what have you gotten yourself into?"

She started to make her way back to her room, so I quietly ran back into my room, trying not to get caught.

Luckily, she didn't see me. I pressed my back against the wall and slid down. All these questions were rushing in my head. Who was my mom talking to? Who was the man behind all these notes? Was there someone trying to hurt my mom?

I couldn't think straight anymore, all these thoughts were starting to make my head hurt. I decided to leave them alone for now, and go to bed. The voices could get a bit overwhelming, and sometimes I just had to sleep it off.

I climbed into my bed, pulling my purple covers all the way up to my neck, listening to the soothing voice of Tyler Joseph as I fell asleep.
