"We were stunned, yet we wanted to absorb the bitter news.
A few more days and all of us would have started to scream.

They used whatever strength they had to cry.
As if all the troubles in the world were not already upon us.
'Keep your anger, your hate, for another day, for later.'
'Clench your teeth and wait . . .'

I had no right to let myself die.
Something in me rebelled against that death.

The iron gates closed behind us.
So we were men after all?
Surely it was a dream."
