We were in a low, arched tunnel. Long trails of moisture seeping down the gray stones, like they were bleeding ink. I was shaking because it was cold; my clothes were still wet, and the temperature underneath the city was wintry. As was Edward's skin. He realized this at the same time I did, and let go of me keeping only my hand that was perfectly fine with me of course.
My slow progress irritated someone-probably Felix-and I heard him heave a sigh now and then. At the end of the tunnel was a grate, the iron bars were rusting, but thick as my arm. A small door made of thinner, interlaced bars was standing open. Edward ducked through and hurried on to a larger, brighter stone room. The door slammed shut with a clang, followed by the snap of a lock.
On the other side of the long room was a low, heavy, wooden door. It was very thick because it stood open. We stepped through the door, and I glanced around me in surprise, relaxing automatically. Beside me, Edward tensed, his jaw clenched tight because he don't want me close to the Volturi or other vampires for that fact. I could tell he doesn't want me to find my true other half. He was going to come back after graduation and kill me. He didn't care what Carlisle or Esme thought or any of the other Cullen's thought when they found out. I know for a fact that Carlisle would have Emmett put Edward in a head lock and bring him down to La Push for the wolves and say that he killed the chief's daughter. I knew that Carlisle would overreact but I know he won't because I am going to meet my mate.
