Pre-face

"Are you ready to go?" My best friend's mum asked. I nodded. She opened the door. My friend waved, "See ya!"she said. I smiled at her and waved back. "Thanks for having me!" I yelled while I ran towards my home. (I only lived around the corner.)I ran home quickly and got there in hardly anytime at all. I knocked on the door. No-one answered so I let myself in. My parents went on a trip to Cananda so I went to my friends house to have a sleepover for the weekend. Anyway I was home now and they weren't. I wondered where they could possibly be. Maybe their plane could have been delayed. "Stop worrying Ruby!" I told myself, "They'll be fine!" but I wasn't quite sure. I didn't sleep very well that night.

Chapter 1

My first day, at a new school. A new life. Why the plane crashed? I wonder if I 'll ever find out. So now I'm on my own at this school where all the children have families. Families to pick them up, families to help them with their homework, families to help them if they were going through a tough time. The thing that I wanted most. They all took it for granted. I don't regret not going to the orphan home. From what I've seen in movied they're not very nice. I'm 13 anyway. The thing I miss most is when my mum would come in my room just before I was asleep and gave me a kiss then tucked me in. Not long after, my dad would do the same. I had the best parents. My neighbour knows my story. Whenever we need a parent/ guardian he's the one. He makes me smile and laugh, just when I need to. Like a real parent. Back to the new life. As soon as I heard, I decided I wanted to sart a new life. Now I go to Brightsons High School. There is like a million kids there. I've only got one best friend. "Hey!" I waved to Nina. "Hi!" she said back. We walked away from the crowd. Nina didn't know I had no parents. "I'm having a sleepover this Saturday!" she anounced to me, "Just you and me though." Flash backs came. I wasn't sure. The last sleepover I had was fantastic but when I got home there was nothing but bad news."I'll think about it.. ok?"I replied. "Sure!" Nina said. "I got to go..." I saud and started walking. "But the lunch bell only just went!" Nina said. "Why don't we just sit in the courtyard today instead of the oval?" I said. "Why?" she asked. The real reason was, I didn't want to be around many people, but I replied "Well it's really cold today and I think the courtyard might block off some of the cold air." "Well sure!" she replied.

Chapter 2

We checked the hallway because it was June 1st(new notice day) (and also 20 days until my birthday). There were some new canteen items, a television show add and an acting poster. I took a clear long look at the acting one. I loved acting. They were having auditions for a Mary Poppens Musical."Let's audition for this!" I said to Nina. She nodded. "Who will you try out for?" she asked. "Mary Poppins!" I said. She smiled and said"I think I'll try out for one of the children." I nodded. I went home and researched Mary Poppins. I decided I would practise. I tried to remember when auditions were. 20th of June! My birthday! I hoped I would have good luck. It could be my birthday present. I remembered Ruby asking me if I wanted to have a sleepover. I thought I'd tell her tomorrow that I would. After all it couldn't be that bad, could it?

Chapter 3

Not having a birthday party would make me happy because I found out that my parents' plane crashed right on my birthday. I knew Nina would be wanting to through a huge party for me, but I was going to stop her. Because what's the point in throwing a party if the person it's to is crying in their room the whole night? From today there's only one week until my birthday! I've been practising for Mary Poppins heaps! Even though I knew Nina will ask about throwing a party I couldn't avoid school. So I got my bag and headed off. It wasn't all that bad. In English my teacher complimented on my hand-writing, at music my teacher complemented on my leadership skills, at recess I helped solve an argue ment between two girls in my class, during math class we had a test but I felt I did well, at lunch Nina asked me about the party I told her "Why don't we just have a sleepover?" (and after heaps of begging and "I don't want something too big!" she finally agreed.) and at Art my Art teacher compliemented my drawing skills. So I went home happily. Until I found a letter on my kitchen table that is. It was dated back from Friday May 13th and the year my parents had went on their trip. My mouth dropped. It took the letter over 1 year to arrive? I opened the letter. It read:

"Dear Ruby,

We are having a great time here in Cananda! I can't believe all the beautiful artwork I've seen! It's very snowy here though! Hope your having fun back at home! Our plane will leave in two weeks!

See ya!

Mum."

Tears rolled down my cheeks. I ran up to my room and sat on my bed crying. There was something different about me from then on but I couldn't quite figure out what it was.

Chapter 4

When I woke up I couldn't tell if it was morning or day. I peeked through my curtains and to my suprise the sun was up and shining. I couldn't remember what day it was. I got out of bed and checked my calender. June 20th. My birthday. I knew Nina had planned something. I got ready to go to school and it wasn't long until I was there. Turns out I wasn't late for school even though when I got up, it was sunny. The weather today was perfect. Nina and I walked over to our usual lunch table. The canteen hadn't had many snacks available today. I stared at Nina. "What?" she said. "What's happening tonight." I sighed. She smiled then answered, "A sleepover." I nodded. "Just us two right? No crowds?" I asked. She noddded. "My place, after school!" she said. "Sure!" I said. We had a great time! Birthdays passed from then on and we did the same thing for my birthday every year. Nina and I were great friends! We had a couple of others join our friend group, Isabelle, Kelly and Sam. We were the best of friends.

Chapter 5

All years came then went in the blink of an eye. My birthday was coming up again. This year I just felt sick and like staying home. I had to tell Nina on the phone. I was staying home and watching movie after movie. It was late and I was falling asleep. I heard a big loud knock at the door and got up. "Yeah?" I said wearily. The people at the door gasped. I couldn't quite see them because I was squinting. I was hoping they weren't burgulars. "Hello?" I said. One of the people reached out, hugged me and cried. I opened my eyes completly. "Mum?!" I gasped. "Dad?!" I hugged them both. A little girl was standing in between them. "Who's this?" I asked. "That's your sister Myra." I smiled, tears of joy rolling down my cheeks, and hugged Myra too. My mum and dad must have told her about me because she hugged me back. I let them inside, still crying. That was the day I thought I finally got a normal life.
