Prologue

Snow; It falls when everyone least expects it. White bundles of joy that sooner or later melt into a liquid mess. I catch myself observing out the caged window, praying to once again touch a cold flake from the darkened sky. It's been days, weeks, months, and years since I've breathed in the open air. Instead, I spend my days breathing in harsh chemicals from the weapons being prepared below. I glance around trying to find an open cot to rest my head after a long day of mixing benzene, gasoline, and other chemicals to create life threatening items. I was once a well-known scientist, I researched genetics. It was my responsibility to locate disorders in human DNA and try to discover a cure. But it all changed November 5, 2010. When my fellow colleagues and I discovered, humans weren't the only logical mechanism on the planet.

Members of my research team Surrey towards the front door of the sanitized room. Their eyes sparkle with wonder as Dr. Mcknight analyzes a patients blood sample. I slowly step out the stainless elevator, my phone buzzing with a text message from Adrian, my boyfriend.

'Tomorrow at the roof top grill?' Adrian questions as my phone flies across the room. How can people be so rude and not acknowledge that I'm standing here?

"Do you see that blood sample? Someone told me that they believe it came from a human-like figure, but they're not actually human." Not human? I quickly bend down to grab my phone and run towards the sanitized room waiting for Dr.Mcknight to notice my presence. After 6 years at the University of Nebraska studying biochemistry in genetics, this scientific body fluid would change my life. I wave my hand trying to have the doctor open the locked door. Dr. Mcknight white teeth gleam as he opens the clear locked door to the lab.

"You know the protocol, Lewis." Dr. Mcknight states as he holds out a lab jacket. Smiling I grab the jacket from his slightly wrinkled hand and do the mandatory protocols before entering a laboratory. The rooms have odors of bleach and other cleaning materials to make sure none of the experiments in the room get contaminated. The blood sample sits in the middle of an empty table, waiting for farther assessment. I glance back at the doctor trying to comprehend what he wants me to do.

"As you heard from your fellow colleagues, we are researching on a sample of blood that came from a specimen located here in Minnesota. The body of the specimen was found in the woods near the boundary waters. We believe he died from an animal attack because of his aggressive wounds on his thorax or better known as his chest." He states as he grabs his notes off a table.

"Also, we learned that the specimen would have died about 14 hours ago. Once the body was sent to the medical examiner, the police and the doctors noticed that slowly the open wounds were clotting." He sighs as he takes off his glasses and stares at me in the eye," I believe you and I are the only ones that can actually find out what is happening inside this man through his genes." Dr. Mcknight slides into a chair and rubs his face. This case can change thousands of lives if the specimen has something in his genes that can create a vaccine or better yet a cure.
