Mark's bedroom was dimly lit and his bed was made up. I may not be that experienced in love but I could see right through him. He'd been planning this for a while.
'Have a seat,' Mark said.
He sat on the edge of his bed, giving me more than enough room to sit beside him. I chose to sit in his armchair. I had to pull his stack of textbooks off it first though. Definitely planned. But a strategic placement of textbooks won't stop me from having the power here.
'Kaira.' Mark took a deep breath but said nothing more.
'Yes?'
I felt myself blushing again. For goodness sake, you boys annoy me.
'We've known each other for a while now, right?' Mark said.
'I guess,' I said. 'But this isn't normal.'
'What do you mean?'
'I don't think we've talked without Eva being in the room.'
'Well she always tells us to get a room.' Mark smiled shyly. He was fidgeting with his hands and I could see them shaking. 'So now we have one.'
'What are you trying to say?'
'Look,' Mark said. 'Do you like me?'
You would never get away with being that needy if you weren't so handsome. I didn't have a chance to answer. Mark steamed ahead.
'Because I like you,' he said. 'And I think you like me too.'
'You're a joker.' I shook my head and looked away.
'I'm not trying to be funny. I'm trying to take our relationship to the next level.'
'You're being awkward, Mark. Why'd you have to say relationship?'
He looked hurt. The CIA isn't paying me enough for this. Mark thought for a moment, then stood up, walked over to me, and kneeled next to my chair. He looked up at me and took my hand. He was trembling. I was too but I was able to control it faster and better than him.
'We've done the flirting stage,' he said. 'That's gone on too long. If we don't move on from there, we'll just be friends. Nothing more.'
'I think we've got at least another month left in the flirting stage,' I said. 'Maybe two.'
'Who's the joker now? I can't wait that long.'
'Well can you wait one night?' I thought I heard Nikolaev's heavy footsteps on the way to his home office. 'Maybe we can talk about this tomorrow.'
'I don't want to talk anymore,' Mark said.
'Me neither,' I said. 'I hate chit-chat.'
'Kiss me.'
