Girl Meets Boy

I was squeezing through the bustling hallway when I noticed Timothy hovering by the lockers, his scrawny neck bobbing up and down as he anxiously scanned the crowds. Quickly I averted my eyes, carrying on my way. Shame bubbled up in my stomach as I felt his gaze upon me and my chest ached with guilt.

This wasn’t me. I wasn’t them.

Sighing slightly, I turned back towards him, fighting against the flow of students. As my eyes locked with his, a broad grin stretched across his face and against my will, my heart skipped. My previous impulse of evasion dissolved into tiny particles and scattered through the air.

“You look pretty happy today,” I commented casually.

“I am.” He replied. “It’s a pretty great day.”

It was true; he did seem happier. Somehow he’d lost his usual timid demeanour, and I sensed a newfound confidence within him. His azure eyes were alarmingly intense, no longer clouded behind his thick glasses. I vividly recalled Debra smashing those glasses spitefully and I felt a flicker of disappointment that he’d ever liked her.

“Wanna go out?” His voice interrupted my thoughts, his voice quiet but unwavering. I hardly believed my ears.

It was incredible how three simple words could spark such a fierce battle between my head and heart. One was flying elatedly, while the other was screaming out a warning of impending social suicide. A quick look at his expression forced me to make a snap decision.

“Sure,” I breathed and smiled at his obvious relief, which momentarily clouded over with doubt.

“I mean like on… like on a date type thing?” He stammered.

“Yeah I got that.” I laughed. He was such an adorable geek.

But as we stared into each others eyes, qualms were already slipping into my mind as I imagined the gossip that would soon spread.

Shy, introverted Raffina dating Timothy, the school punch bag?

I was officially entering high school hell.
