2011- Gaby's pov-There is no Gaby's story without the women that has shaped my life. They are the pillars that hold me up. I strive and fight for them. The beginning is with my abuela Lupe. Brought to the United States by her brave parents to start a new life. They brought their ideals and traditions and along the way my abuela was born. They settled in a small town in Davis, California where we shall stay, live, and grow old. Except for me...I was born for so much more and I was meant to see much more. Well that is according to my mom and abuela. Women being born in my family is not anything new and having the same features is also not uncommon. Born with the same dark hair, light brown eyes, tan skin, and short height.
As a Salvadoran-American. I feel torn between 2 worlds and I never feel like I fully belong in either world. In one setting, I am American, I love starbucks, malls, and english tv programs. But my heart is El Salvador, cleaning every weekend and dancing to cumbia. When my grandma makes pupusas and empanadas I am transported. Knowing both english and Spanish fully connects me to both cultures and it helps. I feel living with the women in my family we hold no secrets no mystery. Well at least I thought. I have been instilled with various expectations and roles within my family. So I never have the time to venture out and discover myself. Love and men is kind of taboo in my household considering that basically every woman in my house is allergic to that. For my mom, her romantic life has never gone too great and my grandma claims that she lost the greatest love of her life and can never love again.
With the brief history of the Gutierrez women. We can fully start my story.
