Finally, it was seventh period, and the last bell was about to ring. I tensed in my seat, and gathered up all of my binders and folders. I had told Crystal about my plan at lunch, and she had agreed with it wholeheartedly. It was time to put our plan to motion. I had to get home as soon as possible, and get back here the same way. I did not want my brother or my mom to come home and find me here, when I was supposed to be at school . No one else would know about the room, and we were going to keep it that way.
Diing.
I madly rush out of my seat, bumping into people as I go. I have to go fast, and the urge to keep all of this a secret is so strong, I would have made my cross country coaches proud m=by how fast I ran. Puffing and wheezing for breath I stop outside of my house. I got here in ten minutes, and I have twenty minutes before the bus will arrive. However, I try not to waste any time as I run around the house, collecting various blankets, and stuffed animals that no one will miss. Once I am all packed up, the bus will arrive in five minutes. I have to go. Just before I exit the door, I see a flash of yellow in the corner of my eye. A sinking feeling comes over me, and I madly try to think of a plan of escape. Blindly, I rush out the back door, and close it just as I hear the front door open. Praying that Tom hadn't heard me I peek around the side of the house. Our bus still ides there, waiting for a invisible me to get off the bus. Finally, it moves away, and I realize a breath I didn't know I was holding. Then, I get the sinking feeling in my stomach again. I have to run all the way down my block, and hope that Tom doesn't see me. This sounded like it was going to be fun.
Miraculously, I make it down the block, and away from my brother's all seeing eyes, without being caught. The way back to school passes by in a blur, and suddenly, it seems like only second later, I am standing in front of Adams High for the third time in the past day.I slip inside the doors again, and head downstairs to where the gym is. My footsteps echoed in the stairwell. Squeaks from shoes on the gym floor greet me as I lean against the door of the gym and watch the Addams bulldogs basketball team practice. A few kids from the team glance my way, Kristy, I girl with long blond hair, Freya, the smartest girl I have ever met, and Lindsey, who always has a smile on her face. Lindsay is the only one who waves, that lopsided grin still on her smiling face. She pushes red curls behind her ears, and jogs back over to the team. I watch them for a while as they run drills and at the very end the coach announces that they are going to play a game of lightning. I cheer for Crystal, but she loses to Freya on the last shot. She whoops, and the two high five. After a quick gathering, Freya counts them off and the cheer for the bulldogs on three. Then, it is time to go.
"You guys looked good today", I casually say to Crystal. It's true that the girls team wins a lot and last year, they got first in state.
"Thanks", she replies. "I kind of hope that we have a replay of last year, with all of our winning. There are definitely some promising new players on the team." We now reach the third floor. All the teachers are gone by now, so there is no worries when we s=come into the door we might get caught. Back In the hallway of the band room, I shove my backpack through the narrow opening and crawl back through it. Finally, I get to fill in Crystal with everything that happened.
"OK, so can you start at the beginning again? The part where your brother get cancer, and miraculously recovered?"
"Yeah", I am so excited to tell Crystal that I have to slow myself down a few times. I t might be selfish to think this way, but now I have someone to share my burden with."It started the night that I realized Tom wasn't going to make it. He wasn't going to live through his cancer. He was going to die unless a miracle occurred to him. I did everything in my power to find the cure. Finally, during one night, Time almost died, because his brain cancer had caused him to go into cardiac arrest. In the moment that it seemed like he was dead, I just couldn't take it. I walked away from everyone, into a part of the hospital I had never been to before. It still had he whitewashed walls, and every room looked the same, but views out of the windows were different. That Was when he materialized out of the shadows. I man in his mid thirties with salt and pepper hair stepped into my path. He asked me if I was indeed Storm Dyson. I answered with a yes. He told me then that my brother as unstable condition, and that he would survive the night. After that hopeful news he told me that while he was going to survive the night, he wouldn't survive the next day.
