"Mum?" I holler down the hallway. No answer. "Mummy?" Still no answer. I sit on my bedroom floor. Pull on my black knee-high Converse. Standing up, I smooth out my red, skin tight skinny jeans and tug the wrinkles out my BOTDF tee. And then, sighing, I head to the bathroom to fix my hair.

I look in the mirror. My hair is a disaster. Slowly, and ever so carefully, I flat iron my waist length, brown-dyed-black hair. Then I clip in a red and grey and black bow and finally go down stairs. There's a note from my mother on the counter.

"Cameron-

Had to go to work early today. Have a great first day of school. Try to look normal for once. Don't hit anyone, don't talk back to your teachers. I hope you keep your head down and stay quiet. Please be good, I'm very busy and cannot afford to be pulled out of work again because of you.

Love you,

Mom

P.S. Please eat breakfast today, and your lunch money is in your bag.

I grab the Fuit Loop box and toss a few in a bowl, then pour some milk in. Now it at least looks like I ate breakfast. I put the bowl in the sink.

I hear thuds in the hallway. My brother thumps down the stairs wearing only his boxers. For being a Freshman, you would think he would know that I don't want to see him half naked.

"Gage, for goodness sakes put some damn clothes on!"

"You can't make me! Just 'cause you're a Junior now doesn't make you the boss of me! 'Cause I'm in high school too now!"

I launch myself over the counter and at him. He dashes back up the stairs, screaming.

"You're such a girl! It's no wonder they all think you're gay at school!"

"At least I'm actually straight, unlike some people!" He yells at me when he comes down the stairs, fully clothed. And wearing my jeans. Again.

"Um, dip shit. Those are mine."

"You grew out of them, fatty." That's not true, I never eat, I can't be fat.

"They're still girl's jeans."

"But I wanna be emo. You went emo when you went to high school why can't I?"

"Because that's my thing. Oh my gods, are you wearing my eyeliner?!"

"No!!" Gage tries to rub it off, only succeeding in smearing it down his face.

"Agh! Go upstairs, take off the makeup, and change! We gotta go!"

He refuses. So he goes to school like that. Smeared eyeliner and all.

He gets out of the car at the curb, and runs up to meet his friends. Who are all wearing tight jeans and black tees. A few of them turn around to look at me driving away, and, in the rear-view mirror, I see they're all wearing their sister's makeup too.

"Gay. All of them..." I mutter to myself as I pull into a parking space. Getting out of the car, I notice a new girl. White blonde hair. Cherry lips. Wearing a black strapless dress and fishnet stockings. Yummy. When she walks past,  I catch a whiff of apples. I watch her walk by, across the parking lot, and into the school. She passes my brother and his wanna-be friends.

I see her turn and say something to Gage, then continue walking.

"Earth to Cam!" I hear in my ear.

"Whuh?!" Oh. It's Jayde, my best friend.

"Hey Jayde. How're you and that guy, what's his name?"

"Oh. Victor?"

"Yeah. Victor."

"He dumped me."

"Aww why?"

"Well, wait. I think i dumped him."

"Was it a mutual agreement?"

"Yeah..." she looks ashamed.

"You were both cheating on each other, weren't you?"

"No!"

"Yes you were!"

"Were not!"

"So I can go ask him?"

"No, please don't....!"

"That's what i thought!" i say with a smirk.

By now, we're in the office, getting our schedules.

"I've got Algebra 2 first. What about you?"

"English."

"Bye, girlie."

"See you."

And there She is again, smelling of apples.
