“Hey, Cameron. Who’s that you were talking to?” It’s Eliot. I look to my right, at him. His blue and black hair looks as if he just rolled out of bed. But I know better.

“How long did it take for you to do your hair today, it looks awesome…”

“Half an hour…” With his hand that isn’t carrying his books, he plays with his snakebites, which he apparently got doubled over the summer. “So, that girl…?” Eliot says hopefully. “Forget about it, she’s mine!” I say, glaring at him.

“And how do you mean that?”

“I mean, we have a date… almost.”

“Man. I always suspected you were bi or something… Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t want anyone to know…” I then whisper, “that I’m a lesbian.”

“Well, if you don’t want anyone to know, then why are you telling me??”

“Because it was announced to my entire English class. Here’s a tip: if you’re going to write notes in English, be prepared to read it to the class.”

“Ouch. So what is she, bi?” Eliot asks hopefully.

“Dude, don’t get your hopes up. She’s a lesbian too.’

“Damn.”

“Anyways, where are you going?”

“Mr. Walloky, Chemistry. How bout you?”

“Same, I think we need to go upstairs.”

We take a left and run up the stairs. Chemistry is on the immediate right. Walking in, we see rows of black tables instead of desks. Eliot and I take a seat in the back corner of the room. The bell rings, but everyone’s on time for this class. But there’s no sign of the teacher… The class is talking amongst themselves. Suddenly, we hear someone clear his throat at the front of the room.

Eliot leans over, and says, “Where’d he come from??”

“Good morning class, I am Mr. Walloky, welcome to Chemistry!”

“He’s too happy…” I mutter.

“Today, we will start with a demonstration of chemical reactions involving fire.”

He mixes powders and liquids, each time producing different colors of fire. It’s pretty awesome, until I look over and see Eliot looking ashamed.

“You’re doing it again, aren’t you?” I whisper.

“No!” He hisses back.

“Let me see your arms.” he refuses, so I grab his arm and lift up his sleeve. There are burn marks by the dozen.

“Eliot David Wallontin! You told me you stopped!”

“I did stop, last year when I was going out with Jayde. But when she dumped me for that stupid jock, Victor, I kind of lost it and started up again.”

“I can’t believe you, Eliot!”

“Mind your own business,” he snarls.

I hear nothing. Even Mr. Walloky has stopped talking, and it appears that everyone is listening to our conversation. Shit.

“Mister… Um…” he looks at his class list, which has our picture below our names so he can identify us easier. “Mister Wallontin, Miss Grimm. Please go to the office.”

“But!” I protest.

“Go now, before you get in more trouble.”

We get up and walk out the room. And then downstairs to the office. We walk in, the secretary recognizes us from last year. Great.

“Ah! Eliot, Cameron. Back so soon?” the little old lady says to us.

“Unfortunately,” we both say. We look at each other and giggle.

“So why are you here?” she asks us.

“Talking during Chemistry,” I respond.

“That’s all?” She sounds surprised.

‘Yeah, that’s all,” Eliot says.

We sit in the chairs on the corner and continue to talk about our problems.

“You need to stop…”

“No I don’t, it’s under control.”

“Not when you’ve got that many burns!”

I sigh, and the bell rings.

“Well it’s time for me to go to English,” he tells me.

“Have fun, she’s a piece of work.”

“Where you goin’?”

“I’m going to…” I pull out my schedule. “Government.”

“Bye.”

“Bye.” I walk out of the office and down the hall to Government. I’m almost there when suddenly hands are covering my eyes. Someone spins me around, hands still covering my eyes.

Emmie removes her hands.

“Hey you,” she says before she kisses me.
