I was staring at the photo of my six year old son Dominic. He had the most beautiful green eyes that matched his smile and those dimples would have you wrapped around his finger. In the blink of an eye my world had turned upside down. Tears began to fill my eyes and I looked around my small two bedroom apartment cherishing the moments I held close to my heart."Dominic, come pick up these toys!" I yelled out as I stepped over dozens of toys scattered across the living room floor. Noticing the crazy amount of trucks, cars, and legos I had bought my son.
I was walking towards the bedroom when a tiny body blocked me "I'm Superman mommy!" Dominic said putting his hands on his hips and puffing out his chest.
I giggled and knelt down to meet the eyes of my son, looking into his beautiful eyes, "Okay Superman, you destroyed the city, time to clean it up before dinner." I said as I scuffled his hair and walked back towards my bedroom.
Dominic looked at his mess with a confused look on his face, "This is too much stuff, can you help me mom?" He yelled out towards my room.
"Let me finish changing," I responded pulling my shirt over my head.
A few minutes later I opened my bedroom door walking into the living room grabbing the bin the toys were in.
I looked around the living room and sighed, "Dominic, come help me!" I yelled over my shoulder towards his room and started throwing toys in the bin.
Once the bin was full I carried it to Dominic's room, "Seriously Dominic?" I said to the complete silence rolling my eyes grabbing another empty bin from his closet. I looked around his room and for a six year old he kept it very neat, superhero posters on the wall, superman bed was made, the books on his shelf were all in order, and his desk was always tidy.
Walking back to the living room, I started throwing the rest of the toys in the bin when I said, "Fine, if you don't want to come help clean the toys up, I'll just give them away."
The sound of little foot steps made me smile and I felt the jolt of a body jump on my back and tiny arms wrap around my neck, "Never!" Dominic yelled in my ear laughing.
I laughed pulling Dominic off of me and began to tickle him causing him to curl up and laugh even harder. I picked up a toy truck saying, "Come on Dom, help me."
Dominic rolled onto his side and looked at the toys I put in the bin and back up at me, "You can give them away if you want, but I know you spent a lot of money on them."
I looked at him confused, "Why would you say that? Most kids cry when the parents threatens to take their toys away."
Dominic looked up at me with a sad expression in his face, "I saw on TV that some kids don't have a lot of things, so maybe they will be happy with some of my toys.."
I have an amazing kid, I pulled Dominic into a hug, "The world should have more kids like you Dom, if that's what you want to do, than we can." I reassured him rubbing his back and kissing him on top of the side of his head.
I felt his head nod on my shoulder, "Yeah mom, let's do it." He said pulling away from me and looking at me smiling.
"I love you son." I told him smiling. Knowing how compassionate he was made my heart melt. I knew I was raising a good boy who will grow into a wonderful gentleman.
"I love you too Mommy." Dominic said kissing me on the cheek.
It's moments like this that make me so proud to call myself a mother. To know that you can love someone more than you can love yourself.
My Dom, my world. No one will ever take him away from me.
I sat up from my rocking chair and realized I was still holding on the Dominic's photo. Everything seemed like yesterday in my memories, but that's all it was; a memory.
I looked down at the photo and whispered to no one in particular, "I will find you son and you will be home no matter what it takes."
