Today was a happy day for you, the day that you may officially break the Malfoy tradition. You were about to be sorted into a Hogwarts house, and you were praying that it wouldn't be Slytherin. You had always felt a deep hatred for your family's beliefs and if you weren't put in Slytherin, you could finally declare your true colors against your mother and father.
A boy with red hair, about to be sorted like you, was looking at you strangely. You felt blood rush to your face, and your stomach felt queasy. What was going on? Suddenly, whatever house you were in, you hoped the redhead would be there.
You tried to keep your mind off of the boy with red hair, by thinking about your little brother, Draco. He was only 9 years old, but was already showing traits not unlike the ones of your parents. You hoped that he wouldn't be like them, but he was their Pureblood prince, the good boy, whereas you were the rebel of the family. You were even nice to the house-elf, Dobby, unlike anyone else--
Your train of thought was broken by the redhead touching your shoulder repeatedly. "Excuse me", he said loudly. You felt a blush creeping into your cheeks, which couldn't look good with your blonde hair. Wait, why did you care about how you looked, anyway?
By the sorting hat, Professor McGonagall was repeatedly saying, "Fred Weasley". With a jump, you realized that the redhead boy must be Fred Weasley.
"Sorry", you whispered, mortified. You felt so ashamed of being in the way of someone and their sorting. They'd probably been waiting their entire lives for this moment. You wondered how long you had been in the way.
"It's alright", said Fred. He gave you a quick smile, which put your stomach in knots, and walked to the Sorting Hat.
"GRYFFINDOR!", yelled the hat. Fred jumped off of the stool with a bow, and bounced over to the Gryffindor table with a devilish grin. God, how could anybody smile so much?
"George Weasley!" called the professor. Another redhead, identical to Fred, marched up with a smile on his face. Crap, there were two of them? Did smiling run in their family?
"GRYFFINDOR!", yelled the hat again. You groaned. If all of the smiling people were in Gryffindor, you would not fit in there at all.
"Y/N Malfoy..." called Professor McGonagall. The hall quieted, as your family was not liked by many. You glanced over at Fred. His face was in shock. Probably can't believe he smiled at a Malfoy, you thought.
Quickly, you walked over to the stool. The hat placed upon your head, you repeated in your head, don't put me in Slytherin, but there was no response from the hat. After a few agonizing seconds, she heard the hat in her head.
Well, well.... a rebellious Malfoy. Not something you see every day, sneered the hat. And you already have good thoughts about a Weasley? Definitely not a rule follower. Well, better be..... "GRYFFINDOR!"
The last word was shouted out to the Great Hall. There was no applause, only stunned silence. Even McGonagall looked surprised. You tried to walk quietly over to the table, but your footsteps echoed throughout the silent hall.
Scared, you looked for a place to sit. There was suddenly not any space on the benches.
"Hey, Y/N!", yelled Fred. The entire hall turned to stare at him. Your stomach was filled with a quivery feeling. "Come sit over here!", he yelled. He seemed to actually want to sit with you, which was odd. You made your way over to him, but there was no space.
"Oi, Perce, move down! Let her sit!", whispered Fred. He suddenly seemed nervous. A tall redhead reluctantly moved down on the bench, leaving a big enough space for you to sit. You pulled yourself onto the bench, and you were suddenly face to face with Fred. Talk within the hall resumed slowly.
Fred extended his hand. "I'm Fred", he said. "Fred Weasley. Pleasure to meet you." He smiled again, and your head started to spin. You shook his hand, and whispered, "Pleasure." You tried to smile valiantly, but it probably looked like a grimace......
**********************************5 years later*******************************
5 years had passed since you had shaken Fred's hand, yet life had not improved. You were bullied about being the only Malfoy ever in Gryffindor, and your brother ordered you around like a slave. Your parents were ashamed of you for all that you were, yet they stopped forcing you to abide by their rules. The only ray of sun in your life was Fred Weasley.
Even after being bid not to speak to a Weasley for years, the jokester had been your best friend since you arrived at Hogwarts. No matter how many times your parents beat you over it, and your brother told you how worthless he was, you remained faithful to him in friendship. He was your partner in crime, and the two of you were the perfect duo. You knew everything about each other, yet there was one secret you had always kept from Fred; your love for him.
He defended you from bullies at every turn, and you did likewise for him (he was bullied for being friends with a Malfoy). You played pranks together every day, even on each other. He was like your knight in shining armor, but he didn't know that.
Lately, however, Fred had been acting weird around you. His smile seemed nervous, and so did his once infectious laugh. You were worried that the bullies were finally getting through to him.....
Today, Fred had given you a note. It had given you specific instructions to meet him in the Common Room during dinner. He probably had another idea to prank his little brother, Ron. Or another prank to play on her. Your suspicions about this rose when you noticed a heart in the top corner of the note. He was probably messing with you..... or maybe he had discovered your one secret.
During dinner, you made your way up to the Common Room quietly. On the way up, your heart pounded faster, as it always did when you went to meet Fred secretly.
"Pine tree", you said to the Fat Lady portrait quietly. If you were quiet enough, maybe you could scare Fred. The door swung upon to admit you.
"SURPRISE!" yelled Fred. Inside the door, the common room was decorated with floating hearts. With a jolt, you realized it was Valentine's Day. Which also meant that it was your birthday. A tingling sensation was beginning in your stomach.
Behind you, someone was pulling your hair. Surprised, you turned around. It was Fred! But then who was across the room? You looked back, and saw that the person was gone. You turned back to Fred.
"Happy Birthday, Y/N", Fred said, and, with a rogue grin, kissed your cheek.
In love with a Weasley........ you had never felt more alive, or rebellious.
