CHAPTER 1

The smell of pancakes woke me up from my deep sleep.  I yawned and rubbed the crusties from the corners of my eyes.  My fingertips brushed my dark brown hair to one side.  I didn't want to get out from underneath the warmth of my blankets.

But today was my birthday, my 16th birthday.  Lily, my best friend Is the person who is going to spend their whole day with me.  I could literally consider her my sister.  I cannot recall the last time either of us needing help and not being ther for each other.

I sat up and just had a great feeling about today.  I put on my favorite pair of slippers which are always right beside my bed.  Even though I knew that today was going to be great I still trudged along slowly putting one foot in fron of the other.

The house was quiet.  A litle too quiet.  I slipped into the kitchen hoping that I would not die on my birthday.  I put one foot into the room and... "SUPRISE!" everyone, including Lily popped out from behind the table or in some other hiding spot.

"Well you know we just had to mix it up just a little on your birthday!" exclaimed my mother.

"Oh, don't worry you guys always find a way to suprise me," I giggled.

Lily ran over from across the kitchen with her springy blonde curls bouncing behind her and wrapped her arms around me.  Like I said she is literally the best sister that I never could have.  She came over to my house before eight and helped my mom with my favorite breakfast.  I'm sure that is as close as you can get to being sisters, without actually being sisters.

Then my mother handed me my special breakfast this was what I got every year and wouldn't trade it for a thing: two Mickey Mouse pancakes with strawberries, syrup, and a glass of orange juice.  I mean it dosen't really sound like much but it was the first thing I always look forward to on my birthday.

"So since you are going to be gone all day Would you like to do your gifts now?" asked my mother.

"Um yeah of course," I said without a doubt.

My mom handed me two boxes one small and the other one was just a tad bigger.  I opened the bigger one first.  It was the perfume that I had been wanting forever and now I finally have it!

"Awe thanks guys! You are are the best!' I thanked them.

Next was the smaller box it was wrapped in a neat bow and red wrapping paper.  I took the box and shook it around just to maybe see what it was it made kind of a jigling sound. I unwrapped the box and took off the lid.  My eyes were almost bulging out of my head and my jaw hung so low that I could have swear it hit the floor. Car keys.

"My very own car! Thank you so much Mom and Dad!  You guys could not make this day any better!" I screamed.

I hugged my parents then Lily took my hand and took me up into my room.  There we did the usual girl-stuff we got out matching outfits, took pictures and curled our hair.  We slipped on sandles and headed for the door.

"Mom! We are leaving we'll be back before eight!" I screamed then walked out the door with Lily.

Lily got in the drivers seat because, she turned 16 before I did. We rolled down the widows and let the wind brush through our hair.  The music was so loud I am pretty sure the old couple with their windows up could hear us in the next lane.

"So where do want to go first, miss birthday girl?" asked Lily.

"Lets go to the mall I need to stock up on some more summer clothes," I said.

"The mall it is!" Lily exclaimed lauging through each word.

We probably parked in the farthest spot away from the mall but that was ok.  Out of the corner of my eye there was this man.  One that made my heart drop to my stomach of fear.  He had a scratchy, short beard and a straw fodora.  He stared at me but never once did he take off his sunglasses.

We walked in to the mall and I started to forget about him, until he started to follow us.  I coundn't even speak right.  Everytime we stopped at a store there he was, right behind us.  Lily was looking at a cute top when I pulled her out of the store.

"What is wrong with you? Lily pulled her arm away from me.

Tears started to roll down my cheeks.  "I think that man is following us.  He won't leave me alone!" I wrapped my arms around her.

"Oh that man? No way he just probably has the same style as us," she paused and we both bursted out laughing.

"Can you hold my drink I have to pee I will be gone only for a second." I smiled then walked down the the little hall where the bathrooms where.

I set my hand bag on the counter, grabbed a paper towel, and dabbed the running makeup under my eyes. I took a deep breath and smiled.  I was still trying to get that man out of my head.  But the thought of him just couldn't seem to leave me alone. My hands started to shake.  I grabbed my bag a bolted out of there.

I saw Lily at the end of the hallway checking her phone.  So I slowed down my pace just a little bit.  Something covered my eyes then I could not see.  I tried to scream for help but his hand covered my mouth before any sound escaped.  I tried to pull his arms away from me, but it was too late.  He was dragging by heels and everything just seemed to stop.
