The Adapted World

Not So Secretive..

I'm in my peaceful place that no one knows about. It's a small, beautiful waterfall that ends in a little pool, hidden by the thick surrounding trees in the middle of the woods. The stars in the sky are reflecting off of the beautiful rushing water. When I looked up at the sky, I heard a twig snap behind me. The trees stood still as stone and the wind stopped blowing. I heard reckless running footsteps getting louder. I froze, unknowing what to do.

"JESUS AVA! Why are you naked?!"

I spun around and saw Alex with his hands covering his eyes. My face heated with anger.

"I was BATHING, idiot!"

"In the middle of the woods?! You ever heard of houses?!"

When I finished throwing on my clothes, I stalked over to him and slapped the back of his head.

"Again?" He whined.

"How did you find this place?"

"I wasn't looking for the place." he said, sheepishly.

"You followed my SCENT?!" I growled. Those who were gifted had heightened senses, so they could live on in this cursed world.

"I know, I know. Don't look for you when its midnight."

"Why don't you ever listen!"

"Okay, I'm sorry.. Is this why?" He slowly smiled.

"Yeah, so I can take a freaking bath." I looked away.

"So why did you look for me?" I glared at him.

"Well.. I know you don't like hearing about my group, but we're having an important knock-out."

I rolled my eyes.

"Please.." He begged, "I want you to come with me."

"God, no. I hate stuff like that." Socializing, in particular.

"Oh for God's sake, this only happens once a year. Either come or i'll drag you with me!"

"I'd like to see you try." I snapped. He took a deep breathe.

"Look. This time they're allowing outsiders."

"No."

"Why are you always like this? After all we've done. I thought we were friends. I thought we were close. I guess you don't care about us after all..." Alex muttered. He slowly turned and walked away.

"Fine." I grumbled. He stopped but didn't look back at me.

"Fine, what?"

"Don't push it." I warned.

"Okay," He laughed, "Tomorrow at 11:30pm."
