She and He

She walked, she walked away from him. Him and all the hell he'd put her through, she had tried to make it work. Tried to make him be different but it would never happen, she finally got it through her head; he will never change. She closed her eyes, something wet ran down her face and they fluttered open; her hand flew to her cheek. She saw a tear, the first she had ever shed. Her eyes closed in anger. Focus, she told herself. She mentally opened her memory file, after searching through places, time zones, and technology she finally found people. She blinked hard mentally clicking the file, as it opened another unwelcomed tear ran down her cheek.

After scrolling down the people she knew she found him, the man she loved. The man she also hated. She blinked hard again and the file opened. All the memories they shared appeared, a smile spread across her face. She hovered over one of her favorites, when she told him her secret. She quickly moved away from it, she wasn't meant to fall in love. She wasn't supposed to! Her chest hurt, it was a pain she had heard of before; heartbreak. This was what she needed to reassure herself that she needed to erase every memory of him; every touch, every smell, every laugh, every conversation.

Before that she wanted to see one more memory, the best one. She mentally clicked and she was transported. When she opened her eyes she was in a meadow, she could smell the freshly cut grass, she could see the light blue sky, and in the distance a flock full of birds flew in the air. She was startled to see herself with him, his light gray eyes sparkling in the sun. She quickly remembered that this is how memories appeared. You are in the middle of them, you don't relive them, you watch them. And there she was; watching.

"Why did you choose this place?"  Said her memory self, lying on the grass, her head in his lap. He looked down at her.

"I wanted to be some place happy, because when I'm with you that's how I feel." He said, brushing a strand of her light silver hair out of her eyes.

"How can you be happy with me, I'm not even human!"

"Really, I didn't know that!" He joked. She held his hand.

"You know what I mean. People...humans are hunting my kind down. Saying we are just some project of the FBI! The TRS is trained to kill my kind! Every human is supposed to join at twenty-one. You're...you're turning twenty-one in two months. They think we're something terrible; something that has no feelings,"

"But, I know that's not true. If you had no feelings you wouldn't be here, with me. You wouldn't know how to make me happy. You wouldn't be capable to. But you are, you have feelings, I know you do."

"How do you know that?"

"I know that because I know you, because I love you."

"I-I love you too." He leaned down and kissed her.

She blinked and just like that it was over. She was in the middle of the street and out of the memory. She looked at all her memories with him, knowing they would never be together...not in the same way. Her heart longed for him. She knew that once she erased the memories there would be no one to long for. Nobody to miss. She hovered over the erase button blinking hard, when suddenly she heard footsteps. Becoming faster and faster, just as they were about to reach her she turned around.

"Look I'm sorry! I'm sorry but I am forced to join the Termination of Robots Society! I didn't want too; I thought that I could run away, with you. But they took me by force! I jumped out of the vehicle to be with you! I would jump out a plane to be with you! You know that I don't care you're a robot, you know that I know there's more to you than that!  I love you; I love you and I want to be with you. Why don't we just run away, right here right now! No one will miss us, but we will have each other. And you are all I need. I...love you." He starred at her with intense love in his eyes. She looked at him with confusion.

"I'm sorry...but who are you?" Sadness flooded through him. He knew there was an erase button, but he had no idea she would have been so mad as to click it.

"Y-you don't remember me?"

"I'm sorry...do I know you? I have very good memory so I would know you if I wanted to."

"Oh..." His head slunk down; he had no idea what to do with his life now. He needed her, more than even he knew. Nothing could have prepared him for this. Just as he was about to move she spoke.

"Do you know anything about robots?" She asked. It seemed almost humorous. She was supposed to be hiding the fact that she even was a robot and here she was proclaiming it in the middle of a street. He remembered her saying something about clicking the erase button once. She said it messed with her mind, she momentarily forgot everyone wasn't a robot and she almost blew her cover. He assumed this is what was occurring now.

"A little, why?"

"Well, I don't understand this but I can see on my monitor there is a back button, which usually isn't there. Do you know what I am supposed to do...do I click it?" Was it a back button as in undo button? Or was it just a back button as in she had just been looking at something and it would take her back to it? He didn't know but he didn't dare have hope.

"Click it." He said without hesitation. Her eyes shut and then opened. Her face instantly frowned in sadness. He knew this didn't mean anything. She could be looking at something else, a memory for example. If it did work, as it did the other time she tried it, she had said she would remember everything that happened. From the time she clicked erase to the time she clicked undo. Her eyes grew big and she threw her arms around him.

"I'm sorry to. I didn't mean to click the erase button! I should have never done it! I love you so much and I just couldn't handle you leaving me! For the TRS it was like I didn't even know you!"

"I know...I didn't explain it well. I just... when you walked away I realized how much I loved you. I got mad at the TRS! I also realized I didn't have to go, that I could finally leave and be free...with you."

"That's all I've ever wanted! When you told me you had to leave, that you we're being forced it just, I just got so mad I couldn't handle it. I just wanted the pain to go away so I..." her eyes started to tear up again. She wiped them away in anger.

"So you erased me." His eyes met hers again, "You're crying? Can you even cry?"

"I don't know." She said laughing and crying at the same time, "I guess so." His eyes got intense again.

"I love you." He said grabbing her arms, she moved them to his chest.

"I love you too," He laughed, "What's so funny?"

"And the man ran away with the robot. It's almost poetic isn't it?" She nodded.

"It is poetic. So are we." She lowered her hand and ran with him, into the distance and towards freedom. Just like it was meant to be; She and He.
