Chapter 2

The miserable have no other medicine

But only hope.

~ William Shakespeare, Measure for Measure

I need to find something to do with my terminal life. Looking through the classified ads online, I need a job. One that doesn't mind a person with really bad vision.

What can I do? I need to make a list of my skills and then update my resume. Ok skills, on a word document, I type skills. Ok what skills do I still possess? Then I type,

manage sales accounts, typing, can take care of kids, take care of babies, sales, do sales projections, answer phones in a professional manner, poetry, make cost analysts for businesses, wait tables, cook decent meals, laundry, clean house, care for pets, simple taxes, filing. grocery shopping, home budgeting, make a really good cup of coffee, some skills with lawn care, sketch, massage for back pain and headaches.

I can't think of any more assets I possess. I pull up another tab for my resume. My resume and start modifying the document. Two hours had passed as I finish. I have plenty of time to look for a job, so what amazing opportunity will I find. I feel a little more confident about my employment future. Three hours later, depleted like a hot air balloon, I sit.  Maybe I'll take a nap, then start straightening my life out tomorrow.

Sleep evaded her last night as a dream took over. Not one of those falling, or flying dreams, but a long ago memory from childhood. Dark cloudless night surrounded her body. In any other circumstances she would have been frightened, but it felt so familiar.

Mack, the name pierced her mind. How did she forget him? Mind fogged with woolen thoughts of the man that was a nightly visitor in her youth. She hadn't had a good childhood back then. It was a lifetime ago that the introverted girl escaped harsh reality of her day life to a night fantasy.

In her dreams she was everything in the harsh daylight she wasn't. Strong, capable, self reliant, self confident and one of the rebel leaders of the resistance in a war on a different planet. Looking down on her black skin tight armour of Lamprey scales she looked around with her eyes. In this double moon world she had special eyes that saw more than normal in this world.

Sleep overtook her easier tonight. Fog enveloped her, bringing her back to Terra. Swiftly finding a familiar landmark, she used the double moonlight to jump into shadow pool. Hmm this was nice, somethings still stayed the same, even if her day life changed drastically.

Through the shadow tunnel, she emerged in a grassy field of lotus flowers. Her head taking in the still waters of the blue glass ocean. Dark chocolate brown eyes shining like diamonds taking in the beautiful scene before her. Breathing deeply in, letting the intoxicating scents of the salty waters intermingled with the fragrance of Lotus blossoms.

Why had it taken her so long to remember this place. His world. Mack interrupted her thoughts, a vision of her childhood friend in this dream world invaded her thoughts. An blurry image of her partner in the resistance would not come clearly to her quick mind. Why couldn't she remember his face?

His long muscular body tossed and turned in the night. Bed wraps laid on the marble floors of his bedroom. These were the only times he saw her. She came to him only at night, like a ghost. She was a ghost of his past when the war was raging. The girl had been his constant companion, leading them to win battles. No one had at first believed in them. But she had seen in his eyes the determination to free their world of Lampreys. So she had thrown in with their lot.

The vile creations had almost destroyed their continent with their constant need to feed on life energy. Their supernatural population finally rebounding from the 20 years of war with the soul less creatures. That was not true. She had found their weakness and used it to help him defeat the lampreys . Finally as the last major battle was won, the tide turned in their favor, she was gone. Maxwell had waited for her to comeback. Months passed and he went to search for her.

In the past she was gone for a week or so, when she would come home. She would excuse her absence with a rueful smile, as she brushed her midnight black hair with her fingers and say "exams" or "paper due" or other cryptic nonsense he did not understand. She was very secretive when they first met. With a head shake he tried to erase the thoughts of her loose from his head. Why now?

He didn't find her after all these years, most probably dead. A sharp pain stabbed his heart at the thought of her dead. Why was he thinking of her now. His Elisabet. His- if she had just stayed. His wolf whined in his head again to run free to search for his mate. If she had stayed she would be a mother by now, with his pups, his mate, his family. Well the double moon goddesses did not bless him to keep her for his mate. Maybe he could have a second chance at happiness. He howled at the moons.

It was written in the history and legends of Terra, in a large volume hidden away... THE BOOK OF HOPE, IN THE YEAR Of THE RED STAR Of TERRA... Many Supers had believed that the war would be won with minor inconvenience, but that hope quickly vanished.

Marcus Maura-din was rumored to have used demon magic with darkness to create lampreys. lampreys where slower and weaker than vampires or werewolves and did not have the acute senses that the other species had. But what they lacked in magic and powers they had in  endurance, never seemed to fatigue.

The lampreys where created to be soldiers, without emotion or compassion to get in the way of their directive. Marcus Maura-din creation's directive was to destroy all other species but vampires. His creations could not procreate, but their source of food was life force, unlike their creator, they sucked their victims dry of life until they died. Most vampires only took enough to nourish, and the older they got the less they had to consume. Lampreys killed, and it was a slow horrible death.

The were and super natural council had been able to capture a few lampreys alive and had their scientists and pack doctors study and experiment on the creatures. Finding a way to kill these abominations was high on the agenda, what they learned, gave the supers some hope. Using the genetic material at their disposal they tried to create an antidote to problem of the lampreys.  Unfortunately 20 years  and thousands of failed experiments later, an answer had rumoured to have been found, but somehow lost.

In a small note folded and tucked in the binding of the large book was written, Look up Angels and Soul mate by typing it in the suject line on The Internet if it has been invented or still exists. If not look it up in the Earth book called the Bible or Terra book called History of Werewolves. If not available, look in the Book of Hope.
