Chapter 1
"Mom, I'm Home." I yelled as I threw my bag down and made my way to the kitchen for a quick snack. I only had about an hour to finish packing, well if I wanted to make it to the beach house for the party tonight. My high school ended classes about three days later then any other school. Which meant if I didn't leave soon, I would miss one of the biggest parties of the year.
"Oh! Hello Sweetie." My mother said, then turned back to discussing with our personal chef, Jean-Claude, the menu for tonight. My father was a defense lawyer, he always had his 'important' clients over for brunch or dinner. Basically, it sucked. I smiled happily to myself, as I grabbed an apple off of the granite countertop. Luckily for me, I won't have to deal with business dinners for tonight or any other night this summer.
"Why are you so happy dear?" My mother asked me, after her and Jean-Claude agreed on the menu.
"Well mother if you must know." I said smiling brightly at her. "It's because you and father are absolutely amazing for letting me have the beach house for the summer. Alone!" I said, barely able to keep the excitement in. A whole summer without parents and rules, just fun, sun, friends and of course boys.
"Your not going to be completely alone at the beach house this summer, Lily." My mother said adding sugar to her tea.
"What?" I asked my voice raising slightly. "What do you mean I'm not going to be alone?"
"Well, I was telling Charlotte how you were spending the summer at the beach house. Which young lady is a five hour drive from here, when she mentioned the boys." My mother said in a matter-of-fact tone.
"What boys?" I asked, tilting my head slightly in confusion.
"Charlotte's son Austin, and Abby's son Jackson. Oh! and Stacey's son Adam." My mother said.
"So, what about them?" I asked, still not getting where my mom was going with this.
"There staying at the beach house with you this summer." My mother said.
"What? Mom, are you serious?" I couldn't believe it. How dare she? My own mother. She knew how I felt about them. After I moved away, everything changed. The phone calls, the letters, visiting, it all disappeared. I don't think they forgot about me, they just didn't care enough to keep are friendship going. The deep down ache, longing, that I felt every time I thought about them came back with a vengeance. 'Its been seven years. Your seventeen now, not the little ten year old girl they left behind.' As I mentally pulled myself together, my mother looked at me with concern.
"Your all older now, Lily." She said softly. "Maybe, you'll become friends again." I looked up at her and gave her a small smile to show her I was okay.
"Mom, no we can't. It's been to long. But I'm fine with that. Just call them up and say that something happen with the beach house." I said, a little of my earlier excitement returning.
"I would honey but I can't. They been there since last Friday." She said and pulled me into a quick hug. "Call me when you get there, okay?" My mother said as she rushed out of the kitchen door, to what I can only assume was a hair appointment.
'Well I could always just stay home.' I thought to my self as I made my way up to my bedroom. 'Yeah, and miss out on a summer parents free.' "Crap." I muttered to myself as I started to finish packing.
Sun Valley here I come.
