"Kenji!" I scream, scrambling to my feet and making my way over to the edge of the stone ledge. I jump down the three foot drop onto the natural rock, dangerously slick beneath my wet sneakers and begin to make my way into the darkness one step at a time. "Kenji! Can you hear me?"
"Amaya, mate yo!" his voice travels up to me and I freeze. "There's a five meters drop in front of you."
I get down on my hands and knees and feel in front of me, the edges of my fingers meeting with sharply curved rock. In spite of my best interests, I get onto my stomach and look down the narrow shoot of rock leading down to where Kenji must be. I can't see anything but slight ripples of black water illuminated by what little light makes it to the back of the cave.
"Are you okay?" I call down.
"Okay," he confirms, sounding weaker. "Demo, I don't know for how long."
"What?" I say. "What do you mean?"
There's no sound, at least not from Kenji. The next sound I hear creeps down my spine and turns my blood to ice.
Laughter.
