My mother always told me that everything would be alright. It always turned out alright for her. Me, not so much. She was so perfect, while I was a mistake. It wasn't my fault. She made me into who I am today.
I know I'm not the perfect child though. I mean, I'm here complaining to someone I don't know about my personal problems. And they aren't even that bad.
Anyways, I've spent all of my summer worrying about what will happen this year. I was a Freshman in high school! My mother always told me that it was the most exciting time in my life. I should always be excited to see what will happen. Then my friends happened. They always told me that their families had said it was the scariest time of their lives.
That just made me more terrified. I was honestly a nervous wreck.
A month later, school started. My schedule had classes that were near each other. It made me feel slightly better. Then lunch came along. I had no friends with me. I was one of those kids that sat in the corner alone.
That made me feel worse.
Just before lunch ended, I saw this tall, muscular guy. His hair was dark and short. I could tell that it was recently cut. His eyes... Oh.. His eyes. They glistened even in the darkest nights. They were blue with green specks. They were gorgeous.
Anyways, he sat right next to me. I guess he was just over there for his friends. He didn't have any interest in me. Not that anyone would anyways. I'm not too good looking, but I'm not ugly either. That's just my opinion though. "What's your name?" I heard a mature voice say. Then I realized, he was talking to me.
"Me?" I asked. He nodded. "I'm Melrose."
"Are you a Freshman?" He asked.
"Yeah, it is obvious?"
"Yeah, most Freshman are like you. They sit alone until someone comes up to them. They're shy and weary. And I usually don't approach one. You look nice though." He smiled.
I felt like I was melting. That smile made me still. I was paralyzed.
"Is this the part where you tell me your name, then you ask me out, dump me a week later and get on with your life? I've had that happen many times. One even kissed me on the first date."
"Well. I'll tell you my name, but I'm not asking you out. I don't know you that well yet." He paused. "Oh! My name. I need to tell you my name. It's Royal... I'm Royal."
"Well, hello Royal." I held out my hand for him to shake it. He shook it. Then the bell rang. "Where's the Japanese room?" I asked Royal before he left the table.
"Here, I aid for your class. I'll show you."
After Japanese I went to Geometry. Math was my favorite subject. I was probably the best in my class. I finally saw one of my friends. "Mel!" she yelled. It was obvious that it was Nile. She's the loudest out of my friends. "Come sit by me!" she yelled again. Her hair was LONG. I swear, if she tilted her head just enough her hair would touch the floor. Yes, it really is that long.
Her eyes were darker than I remember. They were a deep sea green. It could just be the mood that she's in. She has the eyes that change with her mood. Usually her eyes are hazel. Since they're green, she's probably nervous.
Once I sat by her, she started asking questions. She's always been like that. "Tell me, did you meet someone? Do you have a boyfriend? Are you still single?"
"No, I haven't met someone. No, I don't have a boyfriend. And yes, I'm still single."
"We need to find you a boyfriend. You and I need to have double dates." she said. "Our boyfriends can talk while we talk. It's perfect. Genius Nile strikes again!"
"Nile, do you have a boyfriend?"
"No.." She said quietly. "Hanyu broke up with me. He said I talk to much about myself." It was true. "And it's ridiculous. I talked about him all the time. I made him look like a prince all the time. I almost never talked about myself."
"Nile, you're talking about yourself right now." I stated.
"Oh.. I'm sorry Mel. I've been sick of everything lately. I think I might be getting depressed."
"On the bright side, I did meet a guy named Royal."
"Royal Stewart?!"
"I don't know his last name.. He only told me his first."
"Short black hair?" I nodded "Eyes that make you melt?"
"Yeah, it's him!"
"Ohhhh, you're lucky. He's the cutest thing since Maxwell."
"I know!" Maxwell was the best looking boy last year. That was, until he moved to Washington. Far, far away from Vermont. His hair was tousled and his eyes were always bright and filled with light. He was the biggest sweetheart. He always looked after everyone. It was such a shock that he didn't have a girlfriend. I could've dated him.
Actually, no. I wouldn't date him. He was friends with everyone. It would be awkward if we broke up.
Now I see why he didn't have a girlfriend...... It all makes sense now....
The bell rang for Geometry to start. It was quiet for most of the hour, but as soon as we got done taking notes I turned to see Nile talking to a guy. He seemed cool, so I started talking with them. I felt bad though. Nile was ignored after I stepped in. That always happened.
His name was Demetri. He was a little taller than I was, and his hair was just like Maxwell's. But his eyes were like Royal's. It was weird, but I liked it.
After school, I went straight home. Overall, my day was good. I met a couple new people, and they all seem nice. But my classes suck. I hate most of them. I set my phone on the charger, and ran into the kitchen. It was about time I had Ramen. It was cheap, but I love it anyways. If you don't love/never tried Ramen, then you need to change that. Just saying.
When I was finished making it I went upstairs to do the few sheets of homework. This was about the easiest day of the year. It would only escalade from there.
I noticed the light on the top of my phone was blinking. I had a message.
It was from Facebook.
Hey Mel, it's Royal. I wanted to know if me and you could hang out sometime. Not as a date or anything, but just to hang out. You seem cool. What do you say? If you want to, text me. My number is on my profile. Thanks! See you tomorrow! :3
I couldn't breathe. I went on his profile right away.
Hey, it's Melrose. Sure! We can hang out. I'm busy tomorrow, but I'm not Friday. How about then? :P
I was nervous. My heart was almost beating out of my chest. Five minutes passed, and not a response yet. I was starting to feel as if I was too forward. How could I be though? He asked me. Just as I was setting my phone down, it vibrated in my hand. I instantly put in my password.
Sure!(: We'll talk about it tomorrow!
I didn't reply. I would probably get too excited, and get my hopes up. If that happened, the only thing would be waiting for me at the end is disappointment.
Not long after that I got a text from Demetri.
Hey Melrose. Nile convinced me to do something, and it was to ask you out. She knew you wanted someone, and I feel like I should take that spot. So what do you say? Will you go out with me?
I stared at my phone. Something really wasn't right.
Only if you ask me tomorrow. In front of Nile.
I felt so happy. Not only had I made a friend, but I might have a boyfriend too! I couldn't stop smiling.
