Strolling into the Emergency Department of Holby city general hospital, he scanned the area around him. It was exactly as he'd pictured it previously. He gave a sigh and walked towards the reception desk, where a queue was beginning to build up. His eyesight hazy, he was beginning to wonder if anyone would notice him sneak off to grab a cup of coffee...
"Excuse me, there are other patients waiting, you know!"
Ethan Hardy woke from his 'dream' to find a young angry female receptionist in front of him. Without knowing so, he had cut the queue and, looking rather sheepish, he turned around to walk to the back of the line again. In front of him, a young woman, of around twenty years old, groaned in pain. Her hair ruffled, Ethan could tell she had been in A and E all night, and clearly hadn't had the chance to get any sleep. Looking towards her, Ethan felt the same.
"Oww!" A sudden noise woke Ethan up again. In front of him, the young woman winced in pain, and as he took her to the nearest bench, it became clear that she had broken her arm. He opened his bag, and took out what looked like a sling, wrapping it hastily round her neck when all of a sudden, there was a shout from the reception desk.
"I think it's best if you leave that to the professional doctors, sir!" It was the receptionist, again, and this time she was coming towards the patient and Dr Hardy.
"Oh, god, I'm terribly sorry, I haven't introduced myself yet!" Ethan said, blushing. He reached towards his pocket, and along with some pieces of ripped-up tissue and blu-tack, took out an identity card, "Ethan, new specialist registrar?" He was extremely embarrassed, and hoped the receptionist wouldn't notice how late he was.
"Oh, Ethan Hardy? Your arrival time was supposed to be over half an hour ago, you do know this, right?"
"Yes, I'm terribly, terribly sorry, I had an important fami-"
''Fine, please don't be late again, please. I need to get back to reception, I'll send a notice round that you're finally here. Doctor... Chao should be mentoring you today, she's just over at the trauma room."
Trying desperately to follow the receptionist's (Louise Taylor) instructions, Ethan Hardy made his way across to the trauma wards, where he was greeted by an asian lady of around his age.
Her hair, which was jet black, straight and at her shoulder length, gave him the impression that she was a no-nonsense member of staff, which made him want to succeed in his first day of training.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Reaching for his phone in his pocket, Ethan pulled out a random handful of objects. Smiling at an old picture of him and his brother, Cal, he shoved it back in and accepted the call.
A few mumbles later, Ethan Hardy said goodbye, put his phone back into his pocket, and turned to face a man, of around his height and age....
