It was 8:00am and I was about to make a decision that would either make, or break my high school career.
It may seem like a trivial decision to the untrained eye but, this decision could effect my whole life.
As I walked into the cafeteria, I nervously rubbed my palms together trying to ease the nervousness that I felt. I was here in this school where there were 500 kids that could judge me, hate me, like me, hug me, or hit me, and I was terrified.
Now before you say, "wait didn't you go to middle school?" Let me explain something. For 6 years, I went to a small private school that went from pre-K - High school. I was only used to being around like 30 kids everyday. So this was a big change for me.
Anyway, like I was saying, I was terrified. But you know, I tried to act cool because I didn't want my uncle, who was dropping me off, to worry about me. I'm 14, I'm a big girl now, I think to myself as I walk through the doors.
Now this point right here, is where I make my decision. Who I sit with on the first day of school will determine who I sit with for the rest of the year, so of course I'm nervous.
There were three options to choose from. To my right, a boy who looked as if he really didn't want to be there. To my left, an empty table where I could sit by myself like a loner. And finally, the table right in front of me which seated a girl, who looked rather friendly, and a boy, who was just existing.
I decided to sit with the boy and girl because they looked fairly nice and I didn't want to sit alone.
As I walked up to the table, the girl looked up and smiled at me. "Hi! My name's Tonya." she said. When she said that, I felt all the nervousness and tension in my body disappear. She actually looked as if she wanted to talk to me. "I'm Leeyah" I respond. Then, as if on cue, we both looked to the boy sitting next to her. He wasn't paying us any mind though. He was too engrossed on some game on his phone to even notice that I had walked over. She then nudges him. "Huh?" he says looking up from his phone in confusion. "Introduce yourself." she says to him. "Oh, my name is Quin." He says quickly before looking back at his phone. Toni rolls her eyes and shakes her head slightly, "Don't mind him." I sit down at the table as an awkward silence fills the air. For a while we don't talk. I read and she looks at her phone.
Then, all of a sudden, a young guy walks over to us. "Hey! I'm Dr. Shroeder" he says with a big smile. Tonya and I smile back and introduce ourselves. Once again, Quin is playing on his phone and not paying us any attention. Tonya just decides to introduce him to save us the trouble of nudging him.

After learning what advisory I was in, I set off to find it. When I finally find it, I walk in and am greeted by a short middle aged bald man. "Hi! I'm Dr. Z" he says cheerfully. "Leeyah." I say back nervously. He tells me to choose a seat while we wait for the other students to arrive.
One by one, students start to trickle in. I don't really pay anyone much attention as they walk in. But then, I hear the unmistakable voice of Snow.
Now you're probably wondering, "who is Snow and how do you know her?" And that is a story. Well, my Best friend knew Snow from middle school. I knew Snow from her birthday parties. When I met her at the birthday party, Snow was so sweet and nice. Let's just say she's changed ALOT since then.
So Snow walks in and upon seeing me, she yells "Hey! I know you! You're Grace's best friend!" She makes me nervous so I just answer with a meek "Yeah." " How have you been?" she asks, still yelling. "I've been good" I say trying to even out my voice and make it seem as if I'm not intimidated by her.

"So, when I was in middle school, I used to be a bully," Snow states proudly. "I used to bully Leeyah's best friend, Grace." I was intimidated by her before, but I was full blown scared of her now. Dr. Z looks uneasy as he listens to Snow's bullying stories and finally when he's had enough, he asks her to stop. Then he looks at me and asks if I would like to share a time when I did something mean to someone. Now I am a relatively nice per son so I really had to rack my brain to try and find a scenario where I was mean to someone. "Well, one time I accidentally kicked a boy in his balls" I say nervously. Suddenly, all the attention was on me. I knew why too, I looked weak and small, what could this small little girl do to hurt someone is what they were probably thinking. They looked pretty interested in the story so I went on to tell them about how last year in 8th grade, I had meant to kick my friend in the butt but had aimed wrong and kicked him in the balls instead.
