Chapter One// Sugarcoated With Airheads

"Ciara, you're way too nice to people." Jade, my best friend says to me, rolling her eyes. I raise an eyebrow at her questioningly, wondering how you can be 'too nice'.

"No I'm not Jade. Todd totally needed a lunch because he never brings one. Do you even care that he might get run over by a bike every morning, losing his lunch in the process?" I répond back to her nicely. I mean come on I just couldn't let him go without a lunch.

Jade rolls her eyes again. She takes a bite out of her sandwich and doesn't take the time to answer my question. After a few seconds of complete silence between the two of us, she digs into her lunch bag and hands over a sandwich to me, knowing that I'd probably give my lunch away....again.

I thank her silently and am about to open the sandwich bag when Ashton passes by my table with Jacob by his side. I pause my actions and smile at Ashton when he makes eye contact with me. He completely ignores me but then turns around to give me a small smirk whilst Jacob smiles at Jade and I, following behind Ashton out the door to the courtyard.

My eyes follow them until they are completely out of sight and then I sigh with a smile on my face. I open up my sandwich bag and take a bite out of my sandwich.

I look over at Jade, to ask her a question when I see a knowing smirk across her face. "I saw that little exchange between you and Ashton. Is there something I'm missing out on..." she trails off, waiting for me to give her details.

Well, here's the thing. I like Ashton and I have since freshman year. We're now in our senior year. Ashton is more complicated than doing a math equation when you're drunk. I'll smile at him all the time genuinely because I'm a nice person. I greet him every day I come into school because I'm a nice person. I try to talk to him every day because I'm a nice person. I do that with everyone but I try to do those things with Ashton because I'm a nice person and because I like him.

I don't smile at everybody how I smile at him and I never will because how I feel about him is different than how I feel about everybody else. The sooner he figures that out the better.

Ashton and I don't talk because he simply just doesn't want to. When I greet him I either get a smirk or he ignores me and that's more than what any other girl would get. His head does not even glance in the direction of a girl desperate for attention from him. The only person you'll see him talking to is his best friend Jacob, who is very sweet by the way.

"No, you haven't same old greetings, but it's okay because I still think he's the sweetest person on this earth just for acknowledging me on his bad days." I say to Jade. She raises her eyebrows just as I had done a few minutes ago.

"So everyday then, Ciara?" She chuckles at me as the bell rings, signaling lunch was over. I smile at her and hook arms with her as my other hand takes our trash and throws it away.

Jade and I start our walk to Chemistry, which I do have with Ashton as well. I smile at that thought. But I'm always smiling so there's nothing new about that.

As we walk into Chemistry, we go our separate ways because sadly, we aren't lab partners, but it's not all bad because that means we get to meet new people and make new friends. I go to sit next to Jacob and the bored expression playing across his lips spreads into a huge smile. I grin back at him and begin get our materials out.

I put my goggles and mask on as Jacob looks over at me the grin still on his face. "You know, when I drove my car past you this morning as you were walking I was thinking about throwing my banana peel at you but then I realized you weren't my ex so I kept driving." He tells me. I smile at him and laugh.
