"Thanks again for coming with me to visit my weird hometown. City folk romanticize small town life, but really it's just a bunch of superstitious, racist families," Amber tells me as she pulls in front of a house. "But hey, at least you'll be here for the harvest festival. We're both eighteen now, so we can finally go."
"No problem," I reply, "but what sort of festival isn't family friendly? Especially in a town with so little people."
"Well, as the horror stories go, there's some sort of bonfire and a sacrifice!" Amber looks over at my face and laughs. "I'm sure it's just a story to make sure little kids don't sneak out. All the adults go, so no one is guarding the house (except their crazy dogs). They probably just have a bunch of booze and don't want to share."
I still looked horrified, so Amber said, "Oh, Ava, my precious cinnamon roll. Everybody drinks. Even the kids. They take sips from their parent's bottles. You better get used to the idea before you go inside."
Amber steps out of the car, and brace myself and follow her inside.
