The Girl With The Umbrella

I was having lunch alone, sitting on a newly made bench at a park nearby. It was a breezy and cooling day. There were various coloured birds around and there were chirping and hopping from tree to tree singing their songs.

I took a bite of sandwich I brought from home and threw the plastic away at a nearby rubbish bin. Later, I realised that there was a cute puppy looking at me with eyes that were begging for food. I decided to give it the half of my sandwich, which the puppy gratefully devoured, wagged its tail and went on its way.

I went back to the bench and lay down. The sun slowly shown itself from behind the clouds and I was glad that I found a shady nice place under the tree to rest. The tree wasn't large but it was a nice cool place to shade from the hot sun. Soon, I begin to feel a little drowsy.

I heard footsteps from afar. They sounded like horses' hoofs. A part of me thought that I was dreaming while another part of me considered it wise to wake up and check the source of the noise. However, the footsteps were gone in a moment. Somehow, I awoke to find a young lady with curls looking at me. She was dressed in a white blouse and grey petticoat, in her right hand; she carried a black umbrella. She smiled when she saw the startle look in my eyes.

"Don't be afraid, I'm just passing by here to find a place to sit under a shady tree." The girl lay down her black umbrella, curtsied and sat down beside me. She graciously offered me some lemon biscuits which I politely rejected. She held out her hand. "My name is Emilia." I politely shook hands with her and introduced myself.

The wind suddenly became very strong and the thunder seemed to have 'blew' out the streetlights at the park. Emilia waved to me saying goodbye and how nice it was to meet me here. Immediately, the girl was gone and it started to drizzle. Suddenly, the sight of the little black umbrella caught my eye.

Oh dear, I gasped. She had forgotten the umbrella. I ran down the lane to the main gate to try to catch up with her but she seemed to have vanished into thin air. There was no sign of anyone except the puppy who shared my lunch.

As it started to pour, big drops of rain soon started to pelt like heavy icicles on me. Out of desperation, I decided to use Emilia's umbrella to shade myself from the rain as I ran back home.

When I reached home, I decided to take a warm bath and have dinner. However, I slowly felt sleepy and decided to take a short nap in the living room while waiting for mum to join me.

I awoke and felt that the sofa somehow turned a little wooden. I felt the edges of the seat and it was cold; unlike the soft padded arms it had. It was also a little warm and breezy. Did mum open the window? I woke up and decided to close it shut when suddenly, the sight of the black umbrella caught my eye! I was back at the park and it was still bright and sunny. I had fallen asleep.

I picked up the umbrella and inspected it. It looked the same like Emilia's. I decided to walk home and leave it behind when suddenly it started to rain. Suddenly, a note fell out from the folded umbrella saying 'take it with you, it's going to rain. Emilia'

I gratefully carried the umbrella on my way back and was surprised when it started to rain. A storm was on its way.
