Arietta sighed and rolled over. she looked at her clock. 12 am. She sighed again. Why oh why did her dad have to be a wolf hunter? Almost every night she was woken up at midnight by the howl of wolves. Their house was situated in the middle of the woods, so her dad could be more close to his 'work', if you could call it that. Every time her dad caught a wolf Arietta felt terrible, thinking of that life that was to be destroyed, then the wolf skinned, and its fur, whiskers, teeth, claws etc. to be shipped off, then the meat to be cooked and eaten. Arietta never complained, but she found it hard to choke down the tough meat, and found it harder yet to stop the tears of sadness and pity sliding down her cheeks.  Eventually though, she fell back asleep.

Arietta woke up to sunlight streaming in through the window. She heard whistling down stairs"Arietta! Get your butt down here! Its breakfast!" A voice floated up the stairs to her room. Arietta smiled. even though it sounded mean, that wakeup was a rare display of humour and affection.

"Hold your horses!" She yelled down, again, a display of humour and affection. She Grabbed her wolf tee, which didn't have wolf pictures or anything on it, but was made of wolf fur, then grabbed her ripped jeans and ran down, bare foot because of lack of shoes.

"Darling, I made you pancakes!" Her dad, John, was standing behind a huge plate of golden pancakes, stacked high and drowned in golden syrup.

"What's going on?" Arietta asked, suddenly suspicious.

"Well, I'm taking you hunting with me! Do you think you can handle it?" Her dad teased

"Course I can handle it!" Arietta said proudly. even though she hated it, she found wolf hunting fascinating and had always wanted to go with her dad.

"Okay then! Eat up and get ready! We leave at 8!" He left the room, probably to go get ready. Arietta also headed up to her room, and pulled on her camo tee (yes she has one), and some wolf tracksuit pants. She didn't have any shoes, but she didn't care. her feet were as hard as rocks already from running around barefoot. She ran down the stairs.

"Dad im ready! Lets go!" She headed for the door.

"Not so fast dear. I still need to bring the net gun!" This was a sharp reminder of what they ere going to do to the wolves when they found one. Arietta turned away so her dad wouldn't see the look on her face. "Okay, were ready, lets go!" Her dd headed out the door. Arietta silently followed, locking the door on her way out, as her father had told her many times. They trecked for a couple of hours before her dad stopped.

"Look there" He whispered "Isn't he a beauty?"

"I guess.." Arietta Carefully looked at hte wolf. It appeared it had not noticed them, so she looked it over, taking in its magnificence. It was huge, much taller than her, and even taller than her dad! it was dark grey, exept for one of its ears, which was black, and its paws, that were white.

"Arietta! Do you think you could get it?" Her dad passed the net gun to her. Arietta did not want to look bad in front of her dad, so she took the net gun, and sadly aimed at the wolf, knowing what wold happen to it. But she felt that this was no ordinary wolf...
