“And then I told him that he was just plain delusional and that I was leaving him. No way could I stay with some bat-shit crazy guy like that, you know?” Nina threw her hands up wildly around her as she explained her happenings with her latest (ex)boyfriend. I nodded absentmindedly as I chewed on the potato wedges. Nina continued narrating her entire breakup story but I thought about other things.

It had been four nights since I had seen Coffee Boy but I couldn’t stop thinking about how strange that encounter was. I had never been to a burger place after midnight before unless it was during a road trip. But it seemed as if the guy was a regular there. And when he had spoken those two words my stomach had felt so funny. Stomachs shouldn’t feel that way. Not when they’re sick, not when a boy talks to their owners, not ever. So why had mine?

That night I slid out of bed again, hoping to be as suave as before, but just as I got to the door Jane turned in her bed and opened her eyes. When she saw me they narrowed.

“What are you doing?” She asked suspiciously.

“Just…just going to the bathroom,” I told her. “And then I’ll probably get some coffee.”

“Whatever,” she turned her back to me again and the snoring restarted.

Sighing, I locked the door and made my way through the cigarette smoke-scented air to Ben’s Burgers. I ordered Ben’s Vegetarian Special again when I saw that Coffee Boy was sitting in his seat at the end of the bar and staring at the wall like before. I sat down on the same stool I had last time. When I saw his eyes flicker over to me I took my tray and slid one seat down. After finishing half of my burger I turned ninety degrees to look at him full on.

“Hi,” I said finally. He turned only his head to look at me. Coffee Boy blinked.

                “Hi.”

“I’m Rion,” I told him after hesitating a moment. I had expected him to offer his own name too, but he just nodded. I turned back around to face my tray and finished my food. Like the other night I placed my tray above the trashcan and like the other night, before I left I heard Coffee Boy say,

                “Good night.”

So I told him, "Good night."
