"Nat?"
Natalie responded with a few distant snores. Jane giggled. It was 4:51 in the morning, and they had been talking since she got home from the interview. Jane felt a little guilty, but also happy. Happy to be talking with her friend. Happy her stressful day was over. Happy she didn't have class tomorrow. She yawned, a wide, beastly, animated yawn. Jane was free to be herself, whoever that was, during these times. Without judgement. Without fear.
"Goodnight, Natalie." Jane whispered, ending the call with a smile.
Double checking that her phone was on the charger, Jane fell back onto her bed, relishing in the soft sheets and warm covers. It was so satisfying, drifting off in peace, feeling the comfort radiating from her bed. Before long, she was fast asleep. It was pitch black.
Thunder. Or was that her heartbeat? The pounding, the constant and rhythmic pounding. No. This was not Jane's heartbeat. It didn't feel right. It didn't feel familiar. And yet it seemed to come from her own body.
Without warning, a dim, distant light appeared above her. Jane suddenly knew, somehow, that she had to escape wherever she was. Clawing desperately at nothing, she found herself suspended in mid air, not falling but not floating, terrified but oh so calm. Jane caught onto something, something she could hold, to pull herself up with. However, she only found herself dragging it down to the depths of darkness.
"Shit..." She whispered, echoing in silence.
An animalistic wave quickly washed over Jane. It was unexpected and felt wrong, she had never felt this before, but something violent, something as unfamiliar as those heartbeats, was now a part of her. And it wanted something. Before she could do anything, Jane woke up, sweating. She was in her room, illuminated ever so slightly by the sun, creeping up over the faraway horizon. She kicked off the covers, too hot for them, but immediately pulled them back on, too afraid to go back to sleep without them. Once she had felt safe again, it didn't take her long to drift off a second time. By the time she woke back up, she had forgotten all about the strange dream.Authors Note:
Hey, short chapter right? Compared to my usual short chapters? So I'm not sure when I'll upload again, but I enjoyed writing this nightmare thing. I've figured out how this story is gonna go, and I think it's pretty good. I may change the cover and/or name at some point, because I kinda want to think of something better. Anyway, thanks for reading!
