Sanai turned her back. John's makeout sessions usually lasted, roughly, five minutes. She would wait. Actually, she had no choice, but to wait. It wasn't like as if she had any other things to do.

Behind her, the new girl that John had met yesterday, giggled as apparently the making out got hotter. Releasing an exasperated sigh, Sanai checked the time. One minute so far.

'You haven't even known her a full day yet. Come on, really? This is a new low even for you, John.' Moments like these, and there were more and more of them recently, were when Sanai despised her job. How much more of it could she take?

Air next to her shimmered, and her best friend, Xavius, materialized in the swirl. "Watching soft porn again?"

Sanai glared. "Shut up," she said viciously, wishing that John could hear her too, and she could extend the message to him. Now he and his kissing buddy were both groaning, and she checked the time again. Three minutes.

"Hhhmm," Xavius tapped his chin. "Not sure if you're allowed to say those words, but I'll check." Before Sanai even opened her mouth to tell him to stop messing with her, he had disappeared and re-appeared in a flash. "Yep. I was right. 'Shut up' is on the borderline of no-no phrases for you, sorry. Now for me, it's not even listed or even classed as a term. That means I've got all-access to it and you don't."

This time she mouthed it. "Shut up!"

Xavius just laughed and turned to face the couple behind them. "Five minutes have passed. John's really doing good today," he informed her.

Sanai sighed, and Xavius slid an arm around her shoulders. Pulling her into a friendly hug, he smiled down at her. "You ever think that maybe you should get a new charge, instead of John?"

"No," she shook her head. "Don't tempt me." Xavius had been her best friend and balancer for as long as they'd known themselves. Which basically meant that he knew her as well as she knew herself. He was right, of course. A Guardian Angel falling in love with their charge was only bound for disaster. Sanai knew that, of course. 'But what do they expect is going to happen? I watch John eat, I watch him sleep, I see things about him that his parents don't even see. I see what makes him the guy who he is.'

Add that to the fact that she had become John's Guardian Angel where they were both thirteen....she'd watched him grow from an adolescent kid into the handsome young adult he was now at seventeen.

Xavius and herself were figuratively the 'good' and 'bad' Angels on the shoulder: she as the Good balance, Xavius as the Bad. Sanai tended to actually spend more time with John than Xavius did, because as her best friend pointed out, 'John doesn't really need any encouragement to do bad.'

But he kept Sanai busy. For the past four years of his life, since she had been his Guardian, Sanai reckoned that she'd saved his life maybe six times.

"They're calling me." He meant the 'Powers that were', commonly known as the Heaven's Council chaired by the Arch-Angels. Their bosses. Xavius disappeared into thin air again, with just a lingering comment. "Have fun being a voyeur....,"

Sucking her teeth, Sanai gave up. 'I'm sick and tired of this. Why couldn't things be different? How is it destiny for me to watch him meet all these girls, hook up with them and dump them, every second of it, and not feel any way about it?'

Of course, the tiny voice in her head reminded her that she didn't have to; she didn't have to watch every second of his life. Xavius sure didn't. All that was in her job description was to make sure that he made good choices at the right times; in fact, she didn't even have to make sure that he did them, all she had to do was encourage him toward the right direction.

Humans made their own choices.

Unable to stand it any longer, Sanai turned, arms crossed and with vicious scowl, focused on the loving couple. John was a beautiful guy, lean and muscular. His muscles rippled as they circled his lucky girl of the day.

"John." He didn't even flinch. She tried harder. "John Warner." Exactly nothing. of course, he couldn't hear her. No human could hear a guardian angel unless their Inner was open. Inner being the extra-perceptive sense that kicked in instinctively when humans sensed danger or when they were reaching out for celestial help.

Usually, unbeknownst to them, extra-perception was activated in moments of indecision or desperation. Right now, John didn't seem to be indecisive or desperate about anything. Much the opposite, actually. Which why he couldn't hear Sanai calling him.

Releasing a sigh that she was certain could be heard all the way up to the heavens, Sanai fixed the couple with one last glare and spun on her heel. "I'm outta here." Once again, her best friend was right. As Xavius had once commented, 'stop hanging all over him like a lovesick teen. You're an Angel. Act like it.'

"I sure need to," she mumbled before opening a temporal door in front of herself and stepping through the thin air, leaving John and his company to their privacy.

As she stepped through, she admitted to herself that there was just one HUGE problem with that: she was in L.O.V.E.

With a human.

John.

A sigh slipped her lips.
