LENA JOYCE SAWYER
---

I always sat up late at night pondering why would someone ever want to know another persons death date and the amount time they had left. Knowing when someone would die creeped me out, but that's just how the new world is.

It's been this way for as long as I could remember, but knowing my mom will die on November 29th in twenty years still scares me. I will lose my mother when I'm 37.

I mean you have the option not to look at someone's death date, which my mother refuses to look at mine nor my fathers.

But walking into school and just looking at students and all of a sudden your brain is registering names and dates and times of when people will die is terrifying.

I would much rather know how someone was going to die than opposed to when someone will die.

Everyone knew this was a blessed curse. I don't know how it could be a blessing, but it just is.

You think you could just ask someone about when you die? Wrong. Unless you want to her excuted by the government you best keep your curiousities to yourself.

I've always thought about asking someone, but I have to bite my tongue.

Now that I've moved to a new place I will be filled with new dates.

The most terrifying part about this all is you know your date is soon when everyone suddenly is nice to you.

"Lena, please get some sleep. You start school tomorrow and you don't need to be staying up late before a big day." My mother said as she poked her head into my room.

I nodded. "I'm going to sleep now." I said and waited for her to close my door.

Once she closed my door I went back to the same state of ponderment.

No ones ever heard of a logical way to add more time to your date.

After my little thinking session I climbed into my bed and fell asleep.

I awoke to the sound of the alarm clock on my phone going off. I cleared the alarm and got up
groggily.

Since it would be my first day at this new school, Etowah High, I decided to do a full
face of makeup. I did my makeup as I ate the breakfast my mom made me.

After an hour of doing my makeup, I simply brushed my hair and placed it into its part. I got dressed.

Since it was fall I wore a long sweater, jeans, and some brown boots.

"Lena honey, it's almost time to go!" My mother reminded me.

"I'm almost ready!" I called back.

I grabbed my backpack and my phone before trotting down the stairs of my house.

"Where are my keys mom?" I asked looking around for my car keys.

"On the coffee table. Have a good first day hon. I love you!" She said as she walked over and hugged me.

I chuckled softly. "I love you too mom."
