Chapter Three
I tried to scream, but my voice was muffled and died out quickly. I thrashed around, trying to escape the grasp of my assailant. But every second I struggled, the grip on me tightened. I heard a silky smooth voice in my ear, and I froze. “Stop moving. I’m not going to hurt you. I’m here to help.” The pressure on my chest vanished, as he released me. I turned and looked at him. My eyes widened, and my heart skipped a beat. This was him, the man of my dreams, the one I always hoped I would find.
My mind went blank, and I couldn’t stop staring at him. I took in his perfect appearance, amazed at how someone could be so attractive. I loved how his bright blue eyes sparkled in the light. His wavy brown hair looked so soft, and his lips curved into a slight smile. I was mesmerized, and couldn’t tear my eyes away. It felt like only a moment had passed, when I was jolted back to the present. I blinked and looked down to see the boy sitting there, a small smile on his still bloody face. I glanced up and saw that the older boy was laughing as well.
Hot embarrassment spread through me, and I lifted my hands to cover my reddening face. "What?" I asked. He bit his lipped, suppressing another laugh. "It's just that you've been staring at me for the last five minutes," he said. "Oh my God!" I cried, "I'm so sorry." I turned around, and stamped my foot in frustration. Ugh, why was I so stupid? "It's okay," he said quickly. "I don't mind." I looked back at him, over my shoulder. He had a crooked skin on his face, jerked his head at me and said, “Come here.”
I approached him slowly, cautiously going closer. I was nervous, and my hands started shaking. As the distance between us decreased, I felt the pull to him grow stronger. I could hardly control myself, wanting to be in his arms so badly. But I somehow found the strength to resist it, and stopped right in from him. He was a few inches taller than me, but not by much. As I stared up into his eyes, and he looked back at me, I sensed a feeling more powerful than any before. Coming from this stranger who I had just met, I felt love which was building inside me also.
He reached up, wiping a smear of blood off my chin. He caressed my face with a gentle touch, and I sighed happily, taking in the perfection of this situation. I wrapped both my arms around him, pulling us together. His smile widened as I tilted my head upwards. He leaned in, and I held my breath in anticipation. I closed my eyes, and our lips met. It felt exactly as I hoped, and better than I had expected. It was so amazing, that first kiss, and I never wanted it to end. It seemed like an eternity, lasting forever, it was like paradise.
When we finally broke apart, it felt like a part of me was leaving. I stepped back, meeting his gaze again. I could tell from the look that he wanted me, needed me. The question was, did I? I stopped, and broke our eye contact, which felt like I was ripping my own heart out. I stared at my shoes, a tear slipping down my cheek. It was all happening so fast, I needed time to think. I wanted everything to just slow, and let me enjoy it. He seemed to have read my mind, as he knew exactly what I was feeling. “I want to give you time, to think and to appreciate what we have. But right now we need to leave.”
He saw the disappointment in my expression, and lifted my hand to his lips. “Look I know how special this is to you,” he said. But your safety comes first, and right now it’s being threatened.” I nodded, and he continued, “I can’t have anyone stealing my girl, now can I?” I smiled, and he pulled me into a quick embrace. “Nope,” I said, “I’m all yours…” I realized that I didn’t even know his name, and asked him. “We’ll have time for introductions later,” he said. “But now is not the time, I’m getting you out of here.”
He was at my side, and I felt his fingers lock into mine. “Are you ready?” He asked me. I was about to agreed when I remembered the other boy. “Wait,” I said, looking back. “What about him?” I walked over to him and said, “I’m not leaving him. I made a promise to keep him safe, and I don’t plan on breaking it.” “But he belongs here, he’ll be fine. It’s your safety that you need to worry about,” he said. “No,” I protested, “Did you see what happened before? He would have died without me, and who knows what might occurred now. I need to be with him just in case.”
“Look, I know what is going to happen, and it doesn’t involve him, but he can come with us.” He said. “They will send guards after us, to try to capture you. If I help you and they catch me, they will kill me. But if I can do this right, we’ll all be fine.” “And if it doesn’t go as you want?” I asked. He tried to look away, but I looked right into his eyes and said, “I can’t let you do this, let you risk your life for me.” He stared back at me, and in pained voice whispered, “I would never forgive myself if I didn’t try. I need to do this.” I nodded my assent, and our eyes lingered for a moment longer. Before the orb turned black, losing its red color, and as the hunt for me started, the city was plunged into darkness.
