That Green-eyed Monster

by Xavier George Santi

 Prologue

She’s furiously scrubbing the tiles of her rented dormitory’s bathroom. She wouldn’t stop until the yellowish glow turned to white and until she felt numb to her core. As you see, she wanted to be numb. She doesn’t want to feel a thing. She felt like the world came crashing upon her when her boyfriend, no, it’s ex-boyfriend now, broke up with her over a month ago. Yes, it’d been a month now and the sting of those words still burn her skin, her eyes, her being, her core. She wanted to vanish and return in a time where no one would know her and so she could start anew.

She badly wants to move on but she can’t. Not when the silly promises of forever and a future family is still etched in her heart. Not when she opened herself up to someone who she disliked for a long time.

She was the loner, emo kid back in uni while he was the cool, boy-next-door and oh so nice blockmate she had for five years. She wished she just didn’t let him hold her hand when he saw her crying. She wished she just didn’t let those bedimpled, green-eyed and fit boy get to her. She was supposed to shut everybody out of her life and let no one know her. That was what was supposed to happen. That’s how her world came crashing upon her because she let her walls down. If only she just didn’t, but she did.

Her name is Monique and she is still madly, deeply in love with that bedimpled, green-eyed monster named Craig. And she is still furiously scrubbing the tiles of her dormitory’s bathroom.
