My Heart Is Pounding

She maybe feels hurt because she doesn’t want someone else. Maybe because she doesn’t want their story to end. Not just yet. Maybe not ever. She keeps on thinking that it’s been just a month; she still has 2 more months to get it over and done with. She’s not just sure if those three months would be enough to rid her of this nasty love for Craig. Craig, oh Craig why do you need to be so dreamy and nice and cute and cool and… and… and HERE?!

“Oh my God.” Monique breathed.

“What? Why? Ohhh…” Rebecca says. She just looks at Monique calculating her next move.

Craig is already at their booth chatting with Matt. There seems to be a distance between them. He’s there chatting with his friends not even knowing that moments ago she was there. Monique can’t move. She just stares at him. She doesn’t know what to do. She feels numb but there seems to be some pinching on her right arm.

“Hey Nini! HEY!” Rebecca bellows all the while pinching Monique’s right arm.

She snaps back to reality because there really is someone pinching her right arm. She thought it was the pain of seeing her ex. Ow, that really do hurt to admit.

“OW!” Monique complains. “Why, what was that for?!” She asks Rebecca.

“You’ve been staring at him like you were going to have a heart attack!” Rebecca explains. “C’mon let’s go. Show him you’re okay.” Rebecca says while tugging Monique tugs towards their booth.

“Wait. What? No! NO! I’m not ready!” She practically begs Rebecca who seems to be deaf to her pleas as she continues to drag her towards her execution. Oh how emo can I get she asks herself. But seriously how can she face her ex now?! This is the first time she’s out and about and it’s Craig she sees?! She’d been locked up for a month trying to avoid any of his presence but now he’s here! Looking.. Well, looking a little thin. Well at least Craig looked like he’d gone through a little hell right? Not only her but both of them. And then finally, after that seemingly-long walk, they’re there staring both at each other.

Awkward silence. Totally awkward.

“Hi Monique, you look good.” Craig smiles and fuck that’s just fuck. That wretched smile which causes her to blush. Thank God it’s dark in here.

“Thanks Craig. You look, you look thin?” Monique blurts out. Then the group just laughs because yeah that’s stupid and just so outright.

“Well I think it’s going to be a fun, fun night!” Ricky comments. Suddenly, drinks are being shoved down their throats. All seems to have fun except Craig.

Monique notices Craig just looks wistfully down his beer bottle not really enjoying the merriment of his friends. She’s beside Rebecca who’s once again busy with Matt’s mouth. He notices Monique staring at him so she instantly joins the animated conversation the other three are having.

Ricky notices her. “What’s up little duck?” He asks.

“Dunno. Just wanna join the fun?” She hesitantly asks.

“Why? Is staring at Craig a little boring?” Ricky teases. And with that Monique doesn’t even bother to reply. She just drinks the untouched shot meant for her.

The night goes on like that. She occasionally joins the conversation of the three while she keeps on drinking. Matt and Rebecca stop snogging to take little breaths and for Matt to answer whatever Craig’s been asking. Apparently Craig has no other interest towards them. After a few snippets of Matt’s time, he continues to drink and stare at out of nowhere.

She can’t help but wonder what’s bothering Craig. He seems really sad and distraught. Could this be because of her? Maybe, she thinks.  Will they really get back with each other? Is their break-up just a misstep in their love story? She doesn’t really know what to think, better find out for her, she says. So, she stands up and walks over to him before being stopped by a strong hand on her arm.

Well, it’s Patrick. And boy, he looks good. She’d like to say, why hello there biceps but kept her mouth shut and just smiled.
