"You can keep up," I yell over my shoulder at Peyton, trying to be encouraging. After what feels like a few miles of sprinting, we arrive at the room where Jess is. I peek through the window to see her peacefully sleeping on a hospital bed, her glossy brown hair spread around her. There are three doctors huddled in the corner of the room whispering to each other. I don't think they've given her the injection yet, although I would guess that they've done something to make her fall asleep. I look at Braeden and Peyton to see their expressions. Peyton just looks like she's in complete shock, and Braeden is completely expressionless.
Braeden whispers, "What do we do? It's not like we can just barge in there and demand her to be handed over"
"Maybe we can," I say with a smirk.
"No, we can't," he states blatantly.
"You can. Braeden, you are the top recruit in the interrogation department. You have every single person in this building on your side. Come up with something decently believable, and they will fall for it"
"How do you know all of this?" he questions.
"I'm smarter than you think," I answer, and open the door to show him inside. I see him walk up to the doctors, and he starts talking to them. By the looks of it, our plan is working. All of a sudden, Braeden walks out, with no Jess.
"They told me that they needed five minutes to get her back awake," he tells me. I roll my eyes dramatically and start waiting. 10:27... WAIT. It's 10:27? Oh no. My mom expected me home at 6:00. I'm so dead, my mom will be so mad at me.
"What's wrong?" Peyton and Braeden asak at the same time.
"Well, I was supposed to be home four and a half hours ago. I thought that it was like, 4:30 and I completely lost track of time. My mom will never let me go anywhere ever again," I cry. I take a closer look at my notifications. I see a text from my mom.
October 22 6:47 PM Honey, where are you?
October 22 7:12 PM Are you okay?
October 22 7:59 PM You're really scaring me, sweetheart. Where are you?
October 22 8:38 PM Charlotte?
October 22 9:26 PM Please tell me where you are. I'm not mad, just scared.
October 22 10:04 PM Okay. I'm sure you are fine. But please just text me as soon as possible. Ugh. No, this just made this SO much worse. But I'll text her back, like she asked.
October 22 10:31PM I'm so sorry mom. I'm at Jess's. We were studying for our Biology test, and completely lost track of time. Since it's so late, I'm just going to sleep over. Love you. I feel bad for lying to her, but I can't exactly tell her that I'm trying to stop my (dead?) father from turning my best friend into one of his recruits. No way.
"Okay, it's been five minutes," Braeden announces. He takes a deep breath and pushes the door open. Nope. It's a pull down. He blushes deeply, and yanks on the door. I see the doctors shake Jess awake, and she slowly sits up. She looks around, looking confused. She says something to Braeden, and he looks desperate as he explains something. Uh oh. It looks like they might be disagreeing about something. But why wouldn't she want to leave? I look over to the doctors, one of which is smirking. The others just look confused. I gasp, realizing what really happened. They already gave her the injection. Jess has all of the symptoms, so that's definitely what happened. The two confused-looking doctors were doing something else while the third switched the injections. The third doctor knows too much, and we can't leave with him still knowing that Jess already had it. I whisper to our dilemma to Peyton, and ask if she has any ideas.
"Well, this is probably just a thing in movies and books, but do they have a memory erasing serum?" she suggests sheepishly.
"Yes! It's in the lab!" I tell her excitedly.
"Seriously? I thought that was just a thing in books..." she trails off.
"It is, but they found a recipe in some old book, followed it and, bam, they had a memory erasing serum. It only erases the past 6 hours, so we should do this ASAP," I tell her. We get our plan into motion immediately. I pull open the door and ask Braeden to hurry up. He gives me a weird look, but keeps trying to persuade Jess.
I go over to one of the doctors and say, "Sir, this may be a long shot, but is there anything that we can give her to make her feel better? Or maybe force her to come with us? The interrogation department is expecting us in a few minutes, and we'd rather not be late"
"Well, there is a pill that she can take that allows somebody to control her easier. Do you think that would help?"
"Yes, that'd be great! Thank you so much, sir," I tell him sweetly. I'm trying to act innocent, and the doctor is completely falling for it. I follow him into the lab and my senses are on overdrive trying to find the memory erasing injection. We walk down rows upon rows of, well, everything medical. I'm looking left and right for the memory eraser, and I don't even notice that the doctor has already turned around and is heading towards the door. I run down the little corridor, not seeing the memory eraser. Finally, I see it. There, just about two feet to the right. I reach for it, but am stopped.
"What are you doing?" the doctor asks kindly. Shoot. I make up something quickly about dropping my bracelet, and grab the injection. I wait for the doctor to give Jess her pill, and plunge the memory erasing shot into the smirking doctor's left bicep. He doesn't even notice, but his smirk is replaced by a look of confusion. I quickly grab Jess and Braeden, then run out of the little room. I motion for Peyton to follow us as we sprint down the hall towards the atrium, and the exit. As we turn the corner, I see an unfortunately familiar face. My dad.
"Where do you think you're going?" he snarls.
"Well, we were just trying to find the... bathroom. Yeah, the bathroom," Why do I have to be such a bad liar? My dad is an amazing liar, why couldn't that be the thing that I got from him...
"Ha. Like I'd believe you. You're such a terrible liar. I know that you're trying to escape. Dr. Jones let me know that you made your way into the lab to get Jessica. I'm not stupid, you know," he fires, trying to get me mad. I knew that it seemed a little weird that the doctors were trying to help us.
'What do you want from me? You've tortured me for so many years with faking your death, and now this? I can see that you don't care about me, and that is one of the worst feelings for a daughter to have!" I scream at him. I didn't want to say it, but it just kind of came out. You could tell that he was hurt from a mile away.
"You know, Charlotte, I never wanted it to be this way. I'm sorry. You don't even know half of the story. If you really want to, leave. There's the door," he says sadly. I took one look at him, shook my head, and walked out, Peyton and Jess in tow. I'm going to take Legend down someday. I might be saying goodbye to my past, but the past will surely bleed into my future.I'm finished!!! I know this wasn't that long, but it's a SHORT story. Maybe there'll be a sequel. Anyway, sorry I haven't been updating that much and thank you guys so much!
