King And Lionheart by Of Monsters And Men

I watched helplessly as his fist connected with the wall for the fifth time, blood finally finding its way out of the bruising skin. I couldn’t take it anymore. I stood and grabbed his closed fist as he prepared to hit it again. As soon as my fingers touched him, he turned to me. Tears stained his eyes, yet hadn’t fallen. It broke me a little inside. I pulled his arm against me, then pushed him against the wall, my arms wrapping around him. We stayed there, his chest heaving and hands shaking for what seemed like hours, but ended it too soon only minutes later. His eyes met mine, and it was obvious what he was trying to say. I nodded, and gently pulled him towards the bathroom. Washing his hand off, I kissed each broken knuckle. I hated when people made him like this. But I loved him. When band aids were the only sign of anything having happened, we left the bathroom and I pulled him out the back door. We walked around the house, avoiding the open window of his father’s room and walked until we reached where we wanted to go. We hadn’t spoken the entire way. But we were comfortable with that. Sometimes words just don’t work.

Our destination had been an old park that no one had been to in years, save us and the casual loiters here and there. We made our way to the creaky swings and took our places, me on the left him on the right. It had always been that way. We sat for a while, I lost track of time. Our hands clasped and heads tilted slightly to watch the stars.  The sky was a deep blue mixed with black and gray clouds. The stars flickered blue and red and yellow, always flickering but never in time with each other. It was calming to watch. I wondered if the stars looked down on us with the same curiosity we held as we looked to them for comfort. And we sat in the warm summer air, just with each other. The rest of the world and the demons of the earlier day faded around us, it was just us and the stars. I turned to him, and watched his face as the mountains of fear left his eyes and were replaced by peace. He turned to me and smiled. There wasn’t anything else in the world that made me happier. He was my king and I was his lionheart.
