Describe what the quote means to you, especially as you contemplate your college career. "Words are, in my not-so-humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it." -Dumbledore
You always have to watch what you say. What you say can only have two outcomes. The first outcome is positive. You can give someone a compliment and it might make their day better. You can say good morning or good afternoon to someone at a store and they'll say it back. Saying something nice to someone can give them a confidence boost. Sometimes what a person needs is for someone to say something nice. Someone might be hurt and with help from others and kind words. Kind words can fix someone's dark days. A nice comment at the right moment can save someone's life. Kindness can not only build them up and make them feel better, it can also save their life by making them think it through. The second outcome is negative. Insulting someone can hurt them. The second half of the saying "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" is wrong. Words have hurt. What sticks with a person for years is not the compliments, it is the insults. I know this first hand. Through elementary and middle school I was bullied a lot. The bullying wasn't physical, it was emotional. Bad things people say can stay with you forever. In third grade one of my school mates said that when I laughed my mouth looked weird. That day I started covering my mouth up whenever I laughed. Eventually I started covering my mouth subconsciously every time I laughed. It's been almost 10 years and I still cover my mouth. Sometimes words hurt more than actions. When a parent tells their kid they are disappointed in them the kid looks more hurt and sad than if the parent would have hit them. After an injury is inflicted it can be repaired. It might take years but it can be fixed. You also have to watch what you say online. Everything you say online can come back to you. Everything is saved. So many scandals have occurred in the last couple years because of people saying the wrong thing. Saying the wrong thing of social media can ruin your life. You can end up loosing your job and even end up in jail depending on what you say and who you say it to. Whether you want to say something nice or something back you always have to think before you speak.
