Pissed was an understatement. Full fledged anger was all I felt as I walked through the abandoned town. Signs covered the walls with promises of protection and help.
“The children of today are our future of tomorrow.”
“We are united. We are one. We will defeat them.”
Bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit. They were all lies; Empty promises of safety and protection. The government turned their backs on us and fed us to the wolves.
“Daddy don’t let them take me,”she screamed, tears streaming down her angelic face.
I walked over to her and kneeled in front of her,”we won’t let them take you, I promise.”
My dad looked to the closest soldier,”we can protect her, we’re willing to take the risk.”
The soldier began to talk into his walkie talkie, his hushed tone not allowing us to hear what he was saying. A crackling noise sounded from the device and a foreign voice could be heard,”take care of the opposition.” My dad and I then realized that something was wrong, very wrong. Two more soldiers came through the door, their guns trained on us.
“Let go of the girl and we will leave you alone,” said the soldier in charge. The guns trained on us not wavering the slightest. He tried again,”we don’t want any trouble now so please just had her over to us.”
There was no way in hell that I was going to hand over my sister. Anna was the only other family I had besides my dad and I wasn’t about to lose her. I took Anna’s hand and pulled her closer to my body. She pressed her face into my stomach, not wanting to look at the guns.
Suddenly the soldier closest to me tried to grab her and chaos broke out. I swung my fist and nailed him in the jaw just as my dad tackled one of the soldiers with a gun. Shots rang out, glass shattered and just as quick as it began it stopped. More soldiers had entered the room and we were severely outnumbered. Game over.
“Bring them to the compound and take the girl to the ship,” the head soldier commanded sternly.
I was just as bad as they were. I promised to protect her and I failed. I not only failed Anna but I failed my mom as well. I promised her I would take care of Anna and dad when she died. Dad was dead and Anna was alone on a ship somewhere. She was my only hope, my light in this bitter darkness, and I was going to find her and kill the bastards that took her away.

“How in the world did they find us so fast?”
“That’s what happens when you take in small children you find sleeping by a river,” I angrily reply. I knew it was a bad idea to let the stupid boy in.
Giving me a weird look Ashton asks,” what stupid boy did we take in?”
Whoops looks like I said that aloud. “ Well you see Mallory found a sleeping boy by the northern part of the river and decided to befriend him and bring him to camp,” I reply. Why does she go and do things like that? We aren’t a freaking orphanage!
“Did you check his neck? He could be attached. Did you sound the alarm? Does Doc Brown know? Did you begin to-”
“Ash chill there’s not need to unleash the third degree on me. I checked his neck and sent him to Doc.” I understood his concern, I freaked out on Mallory to. I just didn’t like how he thought I was stupid enough not to check. I would never put us in danger and I hoped he knew that. Ashton and I went way back. I had been scrounging for food for Mallory and I when a Cyrobot attacked and I was unarmed and weak. Ashton came to my rescue and invited us to come to stay at the camp his father was in charge of. The camp soon became our home and we’ve been travelling with them for three months now.
