Prologue

The doctor couldn't do anymore. The baby was going to die.

The wind howled as Astrid clung to her new born baby, looking like she was trying to the will the child to live, but there was nothing she could do.

Hiccup begged the doctor to keep trying, unwilling to give up, but the doctor looked at him with sad eyes.

"She is in the hands of Thor now." He said quietly, before he turned and quietly walked away, his dragon in tow.
He reached for the door and was about to close it, but a small hand shot out.

"Excuse me, next in line to be Chief, coming through." A little girl with bright red hair said as she ran in giggling, slamming the door shut behind her before jumping onto the bed with Astrid.

She smiled at Astrid but it turned into a frown.

"Mama what's wrong?"

"Nothing darling." Astrid said quietly.

"But mama,"

"Nauma." Hiccup said, looking down at his daughter.

"What's wrong with mama?"

He looked into her bright emerald eyes before he turned away. "Nothing, as she said." He said quietly.
"But dad,"

"Nauma." He said quietly.

Nauma eyes flared as she glared at the back of her father before she got off the bed and stomped off.

Hiccup sighed and turned back to Astrid and walked over to the bed and knelt next to it.

A stray tear slid down Astrid face a landed onto the pale baby's face.

Another tear began to travel down her face but Hiccup gently wiped it away.

"Can I hold her?"

Astrid nodded and gently placed the child into Hiccup's arms.

Hiccup slowly walked around the room talking to the small child in quiet tones.

The door opened and Toothless sauntered in, looking at Hiccup. He walked over to them and sniffed the child before hurring at Hiccup.

"Toothless, not now." Hiccup said quietly.

Toothless growl softly before hurring more insistently at him and began pacing in front of them, growling when Hiccup tried passing him.

"What Toothless?" Hiccup snapped.

Toothless walked over to Hiccup and raised his head so it was a hairs breath away from the child's head.

Toothless began hurring and making weird sounds, his green eyes growing brighter.

Hiccup began to back away from dragon, but Toothless used one leg to grab Hiccup's good leg, and breathed onto the child.

A small mark appeared onto the child's temple and the child's shuddering breaths stopped. The color began to return to the child's skin and warmth seemed to return to the child.

Hiccup looked at Toothless and back to the child in amazement. Awe as written all over her Astrid's face as Hiccup placed the child back into her arms.

"I know what to call her." Astrid said quietly.

Hiccup looked at her, ceasing scratching and patting Toothless. "What?"

"Ciarda. It means darkness and since Toothless saved her and Toothless was mostly born from darkness," she trailed off looking down at the child, frowning.

"What's wrong?" Hiccup asked.

"The mark. It looks like, well, a dragons fire."

"What?" Hiccup went over and looked down at the child. Astrid was right. As plain as day, the mark stood out.

"What does it mean?" Astrid whispered.

"I don't know, I don't know." Hiccup and looked over at Toothless as the dragon seemed to be watching the child in interest.

What had his dragon done?

Chapter One

5 years later

"Hurry up, slow poke!" Nauma yelled over her shoulder as she ran to the dock.

"I'm coming!" I shouted back, easily catching up to her.

She gave me a sideways glance before she smirked and ran faster. I followed, keeping pace.

We made it to the dock just in time to see a plasma bolt fly into the sky from a far away ship.

"Mama and papa are back!" My sister said gleefully, clapping her hands together.

I gave an excited squeal and felt something warm spread across my face and frowned. That was odd.

My sister turned to me grinning, but her smile quickly disappeared. "Ciarda, you mark."She quickly grabbed my bangs and gently brushed them so it covered my mark.

I took my braid and played with the end of it. Why couldn't I be normal? Why did the gods curse me with this?

"I see you have woken early, my young granddaughters." Our grandfather, Stoick said as clapped us on the back.

We gave him a smile and returned our gazes to the ship. They had been gone for 3 months but to me it had seemed like an eternity.

"Have you two gone out dragon searching yet?" Our grandfather asked.

We shook our heads. My sister was going as soon as papa got back. But I was not allowed to come. I was to stay home.

I felt something dark twist inside me. It's not fair! I fumed. She was only two years older than me! Besides, I knew more about dragons than she did! Why couldn't I go?

"Ciarda, your eyes. They've changed." My grandfather mused, looking into my face.

Crap! I quickly looked down into a puddle to see my eyes. The pupils were slitted, like Toothless's when he got angry, and my blue eyes had lightened into a electric blue.

Calm down, calm down. I took a deep breath and looked up. "Sorry grandfather, there was just something in my eyes."

He gave me a curious look before nodding and he turned away. I looked down at my feet.

It had been hard, controlling it without mama and papa here. I had lied to grandfather so many times. I winced. Mama said lying was bad. So had papa.

I sighed. Soon they would be back, and I wouldn't have to worry about it anymore.
