When I woke up, the first thing I looked at was myself in the mirror. It was Monday today.

The day I had to do a speech in front of hundreds, a speech that I had only practiced one hundred times.

I refuse to leave the house. My mom hadn't got home yet, and she told me they had been delayed on their way home. I'm sure they'd arrived while I'm at school, doing my speech – preparing for death.

I slowly got dressed and made myself look nice. I didn't eat since I was too nervous. It was seven fifty-three when I left the house with my bag, and got into Bruce's car. He didn't mind me driving it, because I was always safe when driving. If any day I was going to run a red light it would be today.

My phone vibrated in the cup holder and I resisted the urge to read it, because I knew it would only be Tristan.

After the short drive to school, I drove to the front, where there were two car parks. One was empty but the other one was taken by a black jeep. It had a big shiny placard that said Senior Class President on the parking spot. I tried my best to park straight, and turned the engine off when the car was fully in.

I stepped out into the fresh air, and slipped my bag over my shoulder.

"Parkerrrrrrr, what's going?" Brad, the male class president – and also my co-leader for the rest of senior year – pushed himself off of his car and closed the car door after me.

"Brad," I acknowledged him, but walked past him.

I locked the car and dodged some new freshman as I made my way into the entrance of the school.

"Is that all I get? Mae, come on we're class president together. How about we celebrate our class presidency?" he laughed as he had to run to keep up with my fast strides. We quickly walked up the stairs.

"Have you even written a speech?" I asked, as I pushed the double set of doors open, which brought us into the main hallway of our school, where all the lockers were. I walked down the center corridor to my locker, which was going to be moved any second.

"Of course I have; I mean it's probably not as great as yours. But I have."

I loved Brad, he was like a brother to me – but sometimes he pushed all my buttons, and I hated people like this. This coming school year we had to lead the entire school, and if he couldn't cooperate with me we were going to have a problem.

"Good. Are you ready to go in now?" I asked, opening my locker and pushing the door up against his face.

"It's eight fourteen?"

"Yeah, it starts at eight thirty. We have to sit up the front anyways, so let's just go in now." I shoved everything into my locker and walked the opposite direction to the auditorium where the principal was pacing the stage. Some of the teachers had already come in and sat at the back.

Brad followed me and we walked down the steps until we reached the stage. The principal came and greeted us, and he pulled us both onto the stage. He basically showed us the ropes and introduced us to the podium and the microphone, where we would be doing our speeches in over twenty minutes.

I sat down in the middle of the front row with Brad, and I couldn't contain my nerves. People started to flood in, with their new summer clothes that they'd all recently bought over the summer. Brad faced forwards as I turned and watch everyone come inside and find their seats.
