The grass block was the second block to ever be introduced to Minecraft. It is minable with a hand but if you want it to go quicker, the use a shovel. It can be stacked in 64's. However, if you mine it, it will change into Mud or Dirt. The only way to keep it in it's Grass form is to use a shovel with a silk touch enchantment. It is a solid block and it is not transparent. If you keep animals on this block, they will eat the grass and turn it into Dirt, but after about 2.5 minutes it will turn back into Grass. If you are above ground, Grass/Dirt is one of the most common blocks. Sometimes, it can even be found underground.
