It is ridiculous to think that I could ever break free from the cage that has bound me my whole life; the fact that I’m even thinking of it, or feeling like it would happen someday, is absurd. Had Elijah known, he would laugh uncontrollably and throw me in that horrible dark shed once again.

Walking into Satella’s “Swan Academy” makes me want to puke at the photos of her plastered on the walls with different classes of children, making her look like ‘Mother of the Year.’ If only people knew her inside the tall endless estate walls that bound our secrets…

I stop a moment to fix my thigh-high navy blue socks before continuing down the hallway. The dress-code for this school requires perfection, not one strand out of place or else it will call for serious trouble with the women in charge: navy box-pleat skirts with white sweaters that require a navy bow at the collar for girls; white slacks with a navy sweater and a white tie that tucks into the sweater for boys. If Satella wanted to send us to hell, she sure knew how to dress us accordingly.

“Blizzara,” Darien’s voice strings me together like a rag doll made for perfection as I smile happily at him. It was routine for him to find me in the morning and walk with me, but today is a bit different as I close my mouth and open my ears to listen to the weird change of pace that is around us.

Suddenly, my muscles are made of clay that slowly begins to harden while I continue to walk down the hallway with Darien. A handful of students gathered together along with the tall beautiful, Linda Lexington. Her blonde hair curls to precision and swoops above her right shoulder, while smiling with her top gums showing along with her squinting brown eyes that glue onto Darien.

I stop in place, which causes Darien to turn and look at me with worry, but I hold my gaze that watches Linda’s long legs walk as if she’s on the runway towards us. She grabs Darien into a hug with a massive smile that spreads across her face before greeting me with her phony expression. Not once can I recall her ever making her own effort to greet me unless I’m with Darien.

Trying my best to look away and tune her out, like I usually do, I can’t seem to find a peak of peace in my mind. The people around us are noisy and distracting, which I act upon and take my leave from Linda and Darien.

Camouflaging into the crowd, Darien calls out to me, but I keep walking eagerly towards the open door where people filter in and out of. It’s a surprise to see the small auditorium fill with students that stare in awe at the stage where my heart startled to a stop. Elijah and Satella stand along with posters to advertise an event, wearing white with hints of navy blue, but their crisp white shoes stood out the most.

Watching the surreal scene of the two being friendly with the students, I don’t take my gaze off them, unsure if this was a dream or not, but my eyes flutter uncontrollably when Elijah’s gaze meets mine. His smile drops for a moment before coming back wider with his hands extended out to gesture me to the stage.

Quickly, I mold into a statue that’s never seen this gesture from Elijah and his smile, meanwhile, Satella’s eyebrow raises in impatience as she waits for my arrival on stage next to them. The bizarre part is that I don’t register in my brain is my feet moving quickly across the floor and onto the stage, and the two welcome me in open arms.

Although, Satella’s bite back into reality isn’t surprising, “Don’t embarrass us,” she whispers through her teeth as she grips my waist. By her saying that is all I need to verify that this is not a dream. Slowly the crowd before me begins to quiet down while Satella and Elijah escort me off the stage, but before I reach the last step, I hear a beautiful melody.
