Chapter 3
High School= Future
Katie was at a student council meeting for lunch so it was just me and Lilly. She pokes at her food with her fork and I just know something is wrong.
I set down my chocolate milk, "Okay, what's wrong?"
She look up from her food, "What do you mean?"
I roll my eyes, "You have barely talked and you're not eating. I know you, Lilly. What's up?"
She puts down her fork and sighs, "My parents were fighting last night."
I look at her in surprise. Lilly's parents never fought. She looks at my face and shakes her head, "I know, it's stupid. Forget it."
I shake my head, "No, it's not. I was just surprised they fought."
Lilly shrugs and takes a small bite of her food, "Everyone fights. It will pass. What is going on with you? You seem out of it, too."
I sigh and look down at my tray, "As you know I went to help out Katie after school yesterday, right?" Lilly nods and takes a bite of her sandwich.
"Well, I helped paint signs with this guy who I sit behind in government. I have sat there since the first day of school, and he always sees me when he passes papers back, yet he could barely remember me." I say with a furrowed brow.
Lilly shrugs, "You're a quiet person. What's the big deal?"
"I went home yesterday and my parents were looking through their old yearbooks. My dad was a very social person in high school, as you know. He had something personal to say about every single person in his class except one girl."
Lilly looks confused and shakes her head, "I don't get it. Why does this have your panties all in a bunch?"
I roll my eyes, "I asked about her and my dad said she only had two friends, she wasn't in any clubs, and she was always really quiet."
Lilly nods understanding, "Like you."
I nod, "My mom said she didn't even remember her."
Lilly gives my a sympathetic look, "You think no one is going to remember you?"
Leaning back in my chair I cross my arms and shrug, "Why would they?"
Lilly thinks for a minute, "Bryce asked you to the dance."
"Oh, you mean the chubby, Asian kid who is obsessed with anime? Is that what you would want to be remembered for when you leave high school?"
Lilly laughs, "No."
"People said high school is supposed to be the best years of our life. I spend them in the shadows studying until my eyes burn in hopes of getting a good grade because my future depends on every grade I get. If these are the best years of my life..." I just shake my head and look at my lap
"I know what you mean." She says with a sigh.

I sit in English class staring at my notes but not really listening. I feel Noah tap on my back and I snap out of my day dream and turn around.
Noah smiles at me, "Penny for your thoughts?"
I smile tugs at my lips, "What do you need?"
Noah shrugs, "Well, I thought you would need the assignment seeing as you were in your own world."
I look at the front then back to him, "We have an assignment?"
Noah nods, "Exactly."
I feel my cheeks get warmer, "Oh."
