KAYLA
Never have I once known love.
Sure, I had dated a few times, but never had I felt a spark.
A voice interrupted my thoughts. "Kayla Rae Thomson! Get down here! I've been trying to yell at you for the past minute!" I sighed as a grin managed to erupt through my poker face. Oh, Liam. My best friend since birth, and the most annoying person I've ever known. I ran my fingers through my tousled hair, and stared at my reflection in the mirror. My red dyed hair seemed presentable enough, and my grey eyes popped with the almost excessive amount of makeup. Liam said I was pretty without it, but I never believed anyone who told me that.
Liam was in the kitchen making eggs and bacon, his back to me, and I gave him a hug from behind. A squeal managed to squeeze through his throat as I choked between giggles. He turned to face me. He rolled his bright blue eyes and raked his hand through his caramel hair. He enveloped me in a hug and I was surrounded by his pine-tree scent. He rocked a dark blue hoodie with some college name on it and a pair of dark jeans with his bare feet.
I took a seat at the table. "So, roomie, what's the adventure today?" Yeah, Liam and I were roommates. So what? We had different rooms and shared the rent. We also shared a fairly cramped, yet cozy apartment.
I smiled, my voice struggling to sound serious. "I was thinking, since it's Saturday, we throw on a coat and head to Central Park." It was early December, after all. A few inches of snow covered the sidewalks of New York City already, and if you looked close enough, you could see some sort of christmas decoration everywhere.
Liam shrugged. "Well, I was thinking we stayed here, maybe had some coffee, and sat down for a movie?" I grinned. "That sounds even better."
After a quick trip to the grocery store, we turned on Netflix and scrolled through the endless shows and movies. We eventually found a cheesy sounding romance movie that neither of us had even heard of. We started to watch it, and it was horrible. The actors kept glancing at the camera, laughed when someone told a joke, and forgot their lines quite often. Liam and I were laughing our heads off, and he slid his arm around my shoulder possessively. I looked at him, confused and shocked. But he responded with a look I'd never seen on his face before, one of hunger, and strangely, sexiness.
"What now, beautiful?" He asked in a deep, husky voice. I just sat there, dazed and my mouth agape. I felt flustered, and at a loss of words. I put my head down and it was only then that I noticed that I was shaking uncontrollably. He cupped my face with his hand, and I only turned away, avoiding his gaze. "I-I have to go... t-to the bathroom!" I finally found my voice, got up, and ran to the bathroom, making sure to lock the door.
Come on, Kayla! You're adults! Why haven't you noticed this sooner? I sighed, still shaking. I didn't need this right now. It's probably because you don't feel the same way. If only Liam knew that...
My gaze shifted to a small picture near the sink. It was Liam and I, in a tight embrace at Central Park only a year ago, when we moved here. I still remembered it clearly.
We had gone to New York City for the week, since we just got out of college and it was the middle of summer. We walked around Central Park when Liam's phone began to ring. He picked it up, and I went off to look at the water. After a few minutes, Liam ran over to me and excitedly exclaimed, "We got the house!" I was confused, we weren't planning to live together. He quickly explained everything about the apartment, and how it was going to be a surprise, since it had been our dream to live in an apartment smack in the middle of New York City.
I sighed and brought myself to reality. I reached in my back pocket for my phone only to find that it wasn't there. Shit! I left it on the couch! I mustered up as much courage as I could, and walked back out, getting another cup of coffee. Liam didn't notice, he was sitting on the couch, staring blankly at his phone, his eyes filled with grief and disappointment.
"L-Liam?" He turned to me, his eyes sad, but with a glint of hope. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have ran away, I just was-" He cut me off, you could tell he was on the verge of breaking down. I'd never seen him cry, not once. "No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have rushed in on you like that. It's clear that we don't feel the same way, so I'll just... get ready for dinner." I glanced at the clock. Damn, 6 already? But I just nodded and went off to the kitchen.
LIAM
I am such a fucking idiot.
I've loved her from day one, and I was stupid enough to let those silly words slip. I turned to look at her as she removed the pizza from the oven, and threw in some unbaked cookies. She's so damn beautiful... It's clear she doesn't like you though... God, shut up, Liam! I quickly averted my eyes to the blank TV screen and sigh. Her voice cuts through my thoughts. "Well, the pizza's super hot, so we'll have to wait for it to cool. You... you wanna talk?" I nodded and invited her to sit down next to me.
"I... I've always liked you." She cringed the slightest bit, but I noticed. "I tried to keep what happened back there in, but it slipped. I'm so sorry. I understand if you want to punch me, and by all means, please do, because I deserve it." I put my head down, truly feeling guilty, when her arms wrap around my neck, in a hug. "Liam, I... I shouldn't have run away. God, I'm an idiot! How can I make it up to you?" I chuckled. "If anything, I need to make it up to you." Her lips curve up into a mischievous smile. "I've got something better than dinner. In the morning, ok?" And with that, she gets up and grabs a plate.
