Chapter 8

A couple hours later I woke up to Keyshia Cole’s ringtone “Love.”  “Good morning Derrick.”

“Good Morning Sweetie. How are you?”

“I’m ok. A little tired. Me and the girls went out last night.”

“So where is my son?”

“He stayed with daddy last night.”

“So you went out and let somebody else take care of my son? What kinda example you settin for him?”

“The kind of example that says I go to work, my bills are paid, we eatin and good I might add and it’s ok to go out and have fun every now and then. Damn don’t call me trippin this early in the morning.”

He hung up in my face. I hated when he did that. Five minutes later he called back. I answered and just held the phone to my ear.

“Look, I’m sorry Nik. I just miss you. I don’t like not being there and seeing you dress up, looking sexy and putting my son to bed. You know all that mushy shit.”

“Yea whatever” I said.

“Do you forgive me?”

“Yea I guess.” I said nonchalantly.

This wouldn’t be the last time he would apologize for saying things I didn’t appreciate.

“I just called yo mama and talk to DJ.”

I looked over at the clock it. It was 7:30 am. “Oh yea? She must be taking him to school?”

“Yea she is. I told him that I would see him tomorrow. Speaking of, what did you need to talk to me about?”

I laughed a little. “I thought I said I wanted to have this conversation face to face.”

“You did, but why waste that precious time talking about something so serious when we can just get it over with now?”

I contemplated asking him about Maurice. All of sudden, my stomach was in knots. I started to cry.

“Are you crying?” he said. “What happened babe? Tell me and I swear I’ll handle it.”

“No I’m not crying. I’m just so stressed out.  There was a shooting at the club the other night.” I continued and started to stretch the truth a little bit. “The police came to my house questioning me and making go into the station to write a statement.”

“YOU WERE THERE?” he screamed in my ear.

What the hell? “Yes I was there. Hell you mean?”

“What I meant to ask is why were you there?” I got silent. “I know you hear me talking to you. Was you fuckin the nigga or something?” Right then and there I knew he put a hit out on Maurice.

“How did you know it was man?” I asked calmly.

He sighed heavily, “I figured it was man because you could really care less about another female getting killed at that club.”

“Yea I understand your thought process behind that but it happened IN FRONT of me. Whether it was a man or woman, I would still be messed up about it…so tell me how you know a man got shot at the club the other night.”

The operator came on the line and said the call would disconnect in two minutes.

“You know I have my resources. Plus, my nigga lil Ron was at the club that night and told me what happened.  I still got people out there looking out for my best interest.”
