Poppy and Lily had been best friends ever since they were eleven. They both went to the same school until they were sixteen and Lily moved to a boarding school in Scotland. Poppy continued her time at secondary school and kept in contact with Lily the entire time. The previously inseparable young teenagers were about to begin attending college together in London. The girls were going to be living and studying together in London which Poppy was so excited about.
"Pops, will you get the post?" Her mother called out from the kitchen.
"I've got it mum." She picked up the small stack of letters from the mat in front of the door. The letter she had been waiting for was in her hand and she could feel the excitement bubbling up inside her.
"Is that the letter?"
"Yes and I am going to open it now in a second."
"Hurry"
"Okay, okay"
The girl fumbled with the seal of the brown envelope, her fingers picked the seal open quickly. She slid the white piece of paper out carefully and unfolded it. Her eyes scanned over the neat black text, widening when she read what she needed.
"What, what does it say" her mother came up behind her to read the letter over her shoulder. Poppy pulled the letter closer to her chest. She couldn't believe it.
"I've got to call Lily." She screamed as she took off in a sprint up the stairs to her bedroom. She grabbed her phone off her desk and quickly dialled Lily's number.
"Did it come?"
"Yes but..."
"Shit you didn't get in!"
"No Lily let me finish!"
"Okay, sorry."
"I GOT IN." She screamed flinging the letter that was still in her hand across the room.
The girls squealed and talked very quickly about how they both had gotten in and how they already had a place to share.
"Skype me later" Poppy said to her friend. "I have to shower and start packing"
"Yeah I can introduce you to James, he should be here by then." Poppy could hear the smile radiating through the phone.
"Ohh your boyfriend," Poppy giggled and wiggled her eyebrows even though Lily couldn't see her face.
"Yeah, bye" Lily said bluntly before laughing loudly and hanging up.
Poppy threw her phone on her bed and went straight for a shower belting out the lyrics to Dodie Clark's song sick of losing soulmates. Once she had finished she dried her curly short chocolate brown hair and pulled her soft mustard yellow jumper on with some black leggings.
She sat down at her desk which was currently scattered with pictures from her Polaroid camera and papers from sketches she had done. She pushed them aside and proceeded to do her makeup. She surely didn't need it, she was quite pretty but she enjoyed painting her skin and creating something new every day. Today however was a simple winged eyeliner kind of day.
Just as she sat down on her bed and opened her laptop Lily's face popped up on the screen. Lily was a beautiful person on the inside and out, her gorgeous auburn hair flowed down her back and her twinkling green eyes shine brightly as she said good morning.
"Morning" Sophie beamed as she adjusted herself on her bed.
"HEY IS JAMES THERE" she asked excitedly. She had never met Lily's boyfriend but from Instagram she could tell that he was cute but his friends were cuter. Lily's faced flushed.
"Hey Lily flower who is this?" A smirking black haired boy teased as he sat down on the couch beside her.
"James this is Poppy. Poppy this is James."
"Hey"
"Hi, so you're the Poppy who Lily's moving in with next week?" He asked whilst sliding a pair of rounded glasses onto the bridge of his nose.
"I am and I can't wait" She replied whilst folding clothes and putting them into box beside her.
The conversation fluctuated as they talked about college and she found out that James was on her course, James admitted to showing his friends Sophie's Instagram which turned Poppy's face crimson.
After talking to Lily for what seemed like all day, Lily had to go and meet her friend Remus. So Poppy waved goodbye and closed her laptop unable to contain her excitement. She could not wait for next Monday.
Poppy spent the rest of the week packing up all of her belongings, clothes, shoes, makeup, cameras and everything else in between. With the help from her mother Poppy was able to fit all of her stuff into five boxes.
By the time Monday had rolled around she was ready to leave, her father and mother fitted all of her boxes into the car.
"Are you sure you packed everything?" Her mother asked as her eyes welled up and she embraced her daughter before she was leaving home for college..
"Yes mum I have everything" Poppy smiled as she squeezed her mother before turning to her father.
"Remember Poppy no boys, no drugs "he laughed as he hugged his daughter.
"Yeah Dad, I remember" She smiled before getting into the car. As she pulled her car away from her childhood home her eyes welled up with salty tears as all of her precious childhood memories came flooding back. But she pushed them back down and turned up the radio as she sang her way to London.
