Chapter One
Fives Day to Christmas
Finally, it was the last day of working at the magazine company, Explode, before the holiday break. Five long days that I didn't need to worry about work. It was just out of my reach, though. Today, I had to finish my dating advice column that was due for the January edition. And by finish, I really mean actually starting it and finishing it. I was a huge procrastinator, and writing a dating column wasn't the hardest thing, ever. Even if I couldn't snag a date, in my real life. I had definitely hit a low point in my twenty-four year old self.
"Skyler," said my co-worker, Rachel.
Rachel startled me. I was just getting into the zone of writing some BS article. Damn it.
"What?" I said, looking up at Rachel, and not at my blank Word document.
Rachel was a hard worker, always finishing her articles two weeks in advance. I was jealous of her. Not just at her hard working skills, but she also dealt with the real stories. Explode was a women-fashion-advice-wellness magazine, and Rachel got to write the heartwarming stories. The ones about a woman who couldn't have kids, received a miracle of actually having her own kids. It was the type of articles that I should be writing, but instead my boss put me on dating advice.
"Your column from the December issue is trending," said Rachel.
I frowned. This wasn't the first time, that one of my articles went trending. Even if I hated my section, the public seemed to love it. The December article was titled, "10 Ways to Celebrate the Holiday Season with Your Other Half". And you can bet that all ten of those ways, were the most cliche ways, ever. That was my secret, make it as cliche as possible and people will love it. Going to college for six years, almost seems like a waste for me.
"I enjoyed your story, more," I said. Rachel smiled, grateful for the comment.
"Ann wants you to publish a challenge, on Instagram," said Rachel.
I sucked in a breath. Ann was the editor in chief, and she forced me to get an Instagram, for the section. Thank God, I have always published my advice column under my pen name, of Tiffany Mitten. I created an Instagram, and Ann was pleased. I would always post on there once a week, mostly me advertising the article. Sometimes I would post something like, "Comment down below the best gift you received from your loved one." It was mostly just to get people talking about the magazine and wanting to buy it. Ever since I created the account, my ratings have gone up.
