It was a close call.

The Visionary had called Nev, suggesting he look into other things Pantzer had stolen that the Venetian could use to get out of town.

Nev put Gabe the Geek on it.

5 minutes later they had a list of inventory. The only stand out object was a 500-year-old vase that let you walk on water.

Nev wasted a moment thinking how much pain and effort had gone into creating a sacred vase for water walking only to be obsolete a few centuries later when anyone could buy a plane ticket and fly across the seas in style. Pantzer must have been a bigger arcane history collector than the Visionary for wanting to own a useless thing like that.

Only, it wasn't useless anymore.

Not if you needed to get out of a town surrounded by water and where the only way over land had been cut off and air access was out of reach.

They were only minutes away when Gabe's tech reported a surge in paranormal energy levels around Pantzer's home.

Nev stepped on it. The Porsche roared up the hill. He pulled into Pantzer's driveway and ran out of the car.

A big black mass of fury exploded out of the front window, skipped over the porch fence in a fluid motion and landed right next to him. The ground trembled from its weight. Huge hooves danced easily to regain balance and it was ready for a new direction in an instant.

The beast towered over Nev, a powerful, beautiful darkness. He caught a glimpse of his own stunned reflection in its midnight black eye. The thief on the animal's back was a way second hand impression. The big vase under the thief's arm a distant third.

The vase. The thief. The coat. The horse.

Nev's spell broke.

Jacklyn almost landed on a tall man with odd features, like his pale skin had been pulled too tight over sharp cheekbones and a pointy chin. The man's surprise only lasted a second. In the corner of her eye she saw a long dagger appear in his hand.

She was already mid leap.

Jacklyn heard the dagger's blade hit the vase. The vase shattered.  A rain of crisp, crystal shards. She barely felt the cut to her side. She fell into running, Matt clinging to her back and her hooves making thunder on the asphalt.

Jacklyn glanced back a last time before turning left at the corner.

The man was on his knees. The surprised expression was back on his face, the top of the long dagger gleaming like a thunderbolt where it stuck out of his chest.

Jacklyn's ears twitched. Time lost meaning. The street tilted precariously. The houses around her became fuzzy, with soft blobs of light for windows. A growling noise. Two sharper lights. Car.

She took two steps to the side to get out of the way. A horn beeped rudely.

Matt made noises.
